The Media Outburst
The punching bag swayed with each punch and kick, relentlessly jerking sideways. Haseena worked up a sweat letting out all her cooped up frustrations out on the punching bag.
The mission, how she drastically failed was still fresh in her mind, waking at the precipice even before dawn.
Her hand was bleeding again where the knife had stuck her, but she didn't care. She continued to beat the bag until everything that she felt was gone.
It was morning, the sun shining brightly as if mocking her. Haseena nursed her injured hand absent mindedly as she put on her uniform and left, feeling none too well.
Once in her cabin, she closed the door informing Ajay to not disturb her for some time. She needed some time off, to cool herself and to plan ahead.
Just on time, her phone rang with the Commissioner's call. She was dreading answering it but she had no choice.
"Jai Hind Sir"' her voice was shaking.
"Yeh kya hai Ms. Malik? Kya aapne khabar dekhi?"
"Nahi... Nahi sir."
Haseena quickly grabbed the remote and switched on the TV. A live news telecast was reported.
"Kya Lucknow ke nagrik surakshit hain? Jab police khud, super cop Ms. Haseena Malik samet, sabse bade cyber-chori ko dobara pakadne mein nakam rahe."
The news repot switched to a black screen with an audio. Haseena instantly recognized the voice. It was the girl.
"Haseena Malik", she said as if were relishing the name. "Ab show shuru hua hai. Dekhte hain kya aap mujhe pakad sakte hain."
She switched off the TV and punched her desk forgetting that she was still on call with the Commissioner.
"Sir...." She began.
"Nahi. Ms. Malik, shehar police ka mazak uda raha hai aur yeh kya kar rahi hain aap. Yaad rahiye, Ms. Malik, mujhe yeh case do din mein suljhana hai."
"Sir lekin..."
"Nahi. Ms. Malik aur yaad rahe agar aap ise nahi suljhaati hain toh aapko transfer ke saath demote kiya jayega."
He ended the call without another word.
Haseena sank down into her chair. She was on the verge of tears.
Her career, her image and her reputation everything was at stake now.
She massaged her head slowly ignoring the blinding pain in her hand, leaning back to rest her head on the chair.
She was taken back to the past, back to when she was just an SHO, where she faced something similar. Everything of hers was threatened by an enemy. Now the same thing was happening all over again.
She couldn't ignore the invading dread, the unsettling anxiety and her qualms about the future.
Haseena kept tapping her desk, the nervousness racing inside her. She recalled the Commissioner's warning over and over again. She covered her face with her hands her mind glowing at a past recollection where she almost lost her career due to a criminal. She could feel the similar stakes in this case too. Who was this girl and why was she bent on destroying Haseena's career. She sank further, her head throbbing of an incoming migraine. She heard a voice outside, KS. She sat upright, her heart burning as a memory surfaced. She figured it out. The last piece of the puzzle came to her.
A smile formed on her lips, almost a menacing one. She knew.
She knew who the girl was.
