A Date Together

The breeze flapped against her skin, chilling the veins beneath her loose fitting t-shirt. She looked up and saw the moon, a beautiful crescent shining down, half hidden by canons of dark clouds. She was mesmerized by it; the beauty that came together with both darkness and light.

Haseena stopped her midnight run and sat down on a nearby bench. She was shivering all over, the breeze gushing towards her almost engulfing her. She didn't care much of the cold. She sat down, folded her hands, closed her eyes and inhaled the night air around her. Fresh and cold.

She opened her eyes and warmed her hands by rubbing them together. She was still staring at the moon, looking at it as if she was just seeing it for the first time in her life. A memory trickled in her mind, back when she was a kid and her father was alive. They had used to watch the moon together.

She closed her eyes again allowing her mind to play the memory. She saw her father as clear as day who was sitting next to her, outside the steps of their house. They were whispering careful not to wake their mother. Her father pointed to the moon and said;

"Dekho Hasi, chaand kitna khoobsurat hai."

"Hmmm...haan abbu. Yeh bahut khoobsurat lagta hai."

"Raat khoobsurat hai, lekin bohot kam log ise dekh paate hain."

"Kyun?" she asked still glaring at the moon.

"Kyunki, meri bachhi, log raat mein apni aankhen band kar lete hain. Woh raat se darte hain." He said. Hasi didn't understand much of what he said back then. He rubbed her shoulder, hugging her closer to him.

Haseena opened her eyes, clouded with tears. This was why she fell in love with the night. Many people weren't open to its beauty but she was and that was one of the most magical things ever. Haseena stayed a little longer and headed towards her home, her mind and soul relaxed, she felt the tension floating away from her body. She felt new. She felt alive.

KS was seated in front of her at the DSP's cabin. They were discussing the case yet Haseena's mind was running back to her run and her trip down memory lane. She wanted to ask KS something yet she didn't know how to.

She remembered the advice of her father that when you need to tell something to a person, the direct approach always works well.

She smiled and closed the file.

"KS, mere paas ek idea hai lekin mujhe nahi pata tumhe yeh pasand aayega ya nahi."

"Kya Madam Sir? Bataiye?"

Haseena hesitated a bit. "Woh... kya tum mere saath ek date par jaana pasand karogi?"

KS was taken aback. Her eyes grew wide. She stared at Haseena in surprise. She could feel the butterflies doing somersaults in her stomach.

"Mujhe yeh kehna tha... meri maa ne tumhe dinner par bulaya hai... aur uske baad hum thodi der saath ghoom sakte hain..." Haseena added quickly.

"OH! "KS said.

"Main maafi chahti hoon agar tum busy ho...."She trailed her rubbing her palms and looking the other way.

For a while everything was silent. Neither of them spoke. Nor moved. Until KS laughed.

"KS, kya tum mujh par has rahi ho?"

She was shocked. She hadn't seen KS laughing wholeheartedly in a long time.
