The Storm Begins
The light of dawn cracked open as the sky burst in beautiful frames of orange. Haseena stirred in her cabin, rubbing her sleepy eyes. Her desk was littered with files and papers where on top a map sprawled. Haseena got up and stretched her limbs yawning deeply. She had been working all night to pursue a lead in the case. She flexed her arms shaking them to lift the numbness when she heard footsteps. She turned around only to see Anubhav strolling inside holding a glass of tea.
He handed it to her. Haseena looked away, the guilt deepening in her heart.
"Haseena Ji, please" he lifted the cup. Haseena took the cup from him making sure not to brush her fingers with him. "Thank you" she murmured.
Anubhav smiled and nodded as he strolled towards Haseena's desk and eyed the map on her table. Haseena looked away slurping the tea distractedly.
"Haseena Ji you've been at this all night haven't you?" he asked, his voice filled with concern.
"And?" she replied coldly. She instantly regretted her coldness towards him.
Anubhav was taken aback by her reply but he forced himself to be composed.
"Nothing Haseena Ji. You need to take a rest." He said as he walked towards her. Anubhav stared directly at her and Haseena felt it impossible to drag her eyes away. "Haseena Ji please take some rest. I'll handle the case for a while."
Haseena turned away and returned to her desk. "I'm fine Anubhav. We need to focus on the case."
"Haseena Ji...."
"Anubhav I said I'm fine" her reply cut through the air silencing him.
Haseena closed her eyes and groaned inwardly. She didn't mean to yell at him but her anger had gotten the best of her. Anubhav resigned as he sat down in front of her, his eyes avoiding hers. Haseena heard a knock on her door and saw Babita madam standing in the doorway.
"Madam, please come in" Haseena said as Babita Ji stepped in and saluted them both.
"Madam can I talk to you alone for a while?" she asked.
"Of course Babita Ji" Anubhav said as he stood up holding the map in his hands. "Haseena Ji I'll update the team."
She nodded at Anubhav and invited Babita Ji to sit down.
"Haseena" she began as Haseena's eyes threw open in surprise. She heard the distinct voice of her mentor. Haseena forced herself to remain calm as she eyed Babita Ji all the while thinking of what she did.
"I overheard your conversation and he's right madam, I know that you put duty first as always but even the strongest officers need to take a break."
"Oh" Haseena murmured, her eyebrows knitting together.
"Madam, I know that there's a history between you two...."
"There's nothing like that madam" Haseena interrupted her.
Babita Ji glared at her and Haseena immediately lowered her gaze cursing herself.
"Don't lie to me Haseena. I know you better than you think" she said as she looked at her, her gaze cutting through Haseena. "Madam, don't let your personal history affect the case."
Haseena looked at her mentor wincing in sympathy as understanding dawned in her. Babita Ji was right, she thought. Haseena couldn't let their personal matters interfere with this case.
"Yes madam" she sighed. "I understand. It won't happen again."
"Good" Babita Ji commented. "First, go home and get some rest. We'll manage the station till then."
