24. A Surprising Return
The Singh residence was beautifully decorated with pink and white balloons hanging in every corner adorned with lush decorations. The wall was plastered with a huge happy birthday banner which of course had to be in pink. KS stared at the number 6 balloon that hung loosely on the frame her heart welling in melancholy as she trod down the memory lane.
She felt as if it was yesterday that she had given birth to her daughter, Roshni. KS had been granted a perfect family, her lifelong dream coming true before her very eyes. As she closed her eyes, her heart rewound her daughter's perfect smile that seemed to hug KS every time. She saw her round and plump face, the dimple in her cheeks that buried deep. She heard the unmistakable sound of her laughter, her giggle oozing through the room. KS smiled her heart cherishing each and every moment that she had as a mother. She couldn't believe that time has crept on her rapidly, that her daughter was growing from an infant to a child.
She opened her eyes feeling a pair of hands grab her waist from behind. KS almost staggered forward but she composed herself touching the hands that embraced her. She felt Lalla's presence long before he hugged her, his coconut husky smell lingering in her heart. Lalla kissed the back of her neck sending shivering sparks around KS that she almost dug her nails into his hands. He turned her around and lifted her chin looking deeply at her eyes.
"Aarey Karu...what are you thinking?" he asked.
"Nothing Vi....just about our daughter."
He pulled her close resting his head on her forehead. KS smiled, his breath drawing insider her.
"She turned six Karu.....I almost can't believe it."
"Haan Vi....me too. It feels as if time is cheating on us."
He pulled away for a second and looked at her eyes, a smirk lifting his eyebrows upwards.
"Aarey Karu...tum bhi" he said laughing pulling her close towards him again, his body swaying to a silenced rhythm.
After a while he pulled her apart fishing something from his pocket and pulling KS towards the banner. He gave her half as he stared sticking the photos onto the wall. KS glared at the photos her heart flailing in its stride. She lifted her hands to stick the photos when she felt herself wobble. Veyom rushed and held her as the two collapsed on each other lost in the gaze of each other staring deep into their eyes.
"Hmmmmm...."
A voice from behind snapped at them awakening them to their senses. Veyom quickly moved aside taking the photos from Karishma turning his back on his mother, his face a mixture of crimson red. KS stood rooted to the spot unable to move staring at her mother whose eyes glared at her.
"If you both are done playing, finish the decorations quickly" Puspha Ji said as she dumped a bowl of laddu in KS's hand and left.
Veyom rushed near KS, his mouth etched in laughter as she stole a kiss on her neck and rushed away before KS had time to react.
After the decorations were complete KS headed towards her room to change when she saw Lalla standing in the doorway. KS tapped him on his shoulder and peeked ahead the curiosity awakened. Lalla wrapped a hand around KS, both of them staring at their daughter.
Roshni had rolled over tummy first on her pink laced mat, her hands reaching for a small toy in the corner. They saw their daughter extend her hands, her nimble fingers clenching in an effort to grasp the toy. Roshni's plump face reddened in exertion, her legs pushing her body upwards in an attempt to grab the toy. KS and Lalla laughed at their daughter's antics, their hearts overlapping with Roshni's incomprehensible giggles.
