A Date Night
The kitchen sizzled with the aroma of frying filtered through with the scent of fresh squeeze orange juice. Veyom stood behind the counter clad in an apron neatly arranging the plates onto a tray. He murmured as he worked, his voice as gay as ever.
He peeked through the window, his eyes resting on the pearly glow of the morning. Dawn had just broke through and the sky was a monochrome color. He was mesmerized by its beauty as he was drawn towards it as a bee to a flower.
He lowered his gaze looking down at the tray as he smiled to himself. He held the tray in both hands and tiptoed to his room, the nauseating scent of coffee, wedges of fruit and the aloo parathas made his stomach grumble in hunger.
He entered the room smiling at the sleeping figures of his wife and his daughter. They seemed to be a match made in heaven, he thought as he smirked at the way both mother and daughter curled their legs inwards as they dozed off, oblivious to the world outside them.
Veyom closed the curtains and dimmed the lights before placing the tray in front of KS. He gently stroked her head and kissed her, the dampness making a weird smooching sound. KS awoke almost colliding with the tray as her eyes fell first to her daughter and then to her husband.
She gawked at the spectacle before her as she saw the tray laden with breakfast. She was utterly surprised.
"What's this?" she asked.
Lalla looked annoyed as he crossed his arms across his chest. "Can't I surprise my wife with breakfast in bed?" he asked as he winked playfully at her.
KS stared at him enjoying the experience before her. She was yet about to meet the romantic version of Veyom, the version that she had fallen in love with. She grinned, the happiness eating up inside her as she looked at her husband and at the tray.
"Surely you can but...."
"Aarey yaar Karu....just enjoy the breakfast" he said.
KS raised her arms in defeat as she broke a piece of paratha and had it all the while looking at her husband. The rich buttery sensation instantly melted in her mouth as KS experienced a flavor bomb. She smacked her lips in delight as she licked her fingers appreciatively.
"This is so delicious" she said as she dug in, her senses overwhelmed.
Veyom leaned forward as KS fed him a piece of paratha, his eyes sparkling at the taste of his own food. He wiped his mouth as he munched, his teeth grinding in retrospection.
"Hmm... that is definitely good" he commented. "Better than yours Karu..." he said winking at her. KS leaned forward and slapped his arm as she chugged the cup of coffee, the bitter tang leaving no space for her drowsiness.
"Vi....this is all great but what's the occasion?" she asked fitting a piece of fruit between her teeth.
Veyom looked annoyed yet he quickly composed himself. He leaned forward and cupped her cheeks staring directly at her eyes.
"I don't need a reason to surprise my beautiful wife, Karu..." he said as he poked her nose rather playfully. Veyom excused himself and left the room much to KS's surprise.
KS wasted no time in devouring the tray in front of her. As the essence of the crafty textures melted in her mouth, her thoughts flew to her husband. She smiled. She knew the exact reason despite her remaining oblivious in front of Vi. It was their 5 year anniversary.
KS kept the empty tray aside as she quietly stepped out of bed and opened the wardrobe, feeling for the present that she'd brought for Veyom. She picked it up tracing the outline of its content, her memory traversing to the past. She placed it back inside concealing it amongst her clothes as she sat down next to her daughter, gently squeezing her tiny fingers.
