I stand on one of the still intact rooftops in silence, staring down at Armin's charred corpse and holding an unconscious, blinded Berthold by the collar of his shirt.
The body of the colossal titan is steaming a few meters away, dissipating and filling the dead silence with a low hiss. Fire burns throughout Shiganshina, a result of the earlier explosion.
My lip quivers slightly, and I have to bite it to keep myself from making a sound. I shut my eyes tightly to avoid looking at Armin's body.
"I'm so sorry," I murmur. "Armin, I'm so sorry." It's taking everything I have not to just give in to exhaustion and let myself collapse. My grip tightens on Berthold's shirt collar, a wave of anger washing over me.
He'll never get to see the ocean, because someone else decided the people within the walls didn't deserve to live.
"Why didn't you run?" I murmur, the question coming out as a whisper as I sink to my knees, my grip slackening on Berthold.
A loud crash startles me, and I turn my head to see a titan clinging to a house behind me, rising clouds of dust and dirt surrounding it. My brows arch slightly as I see a man sitting atop it's back, strapped in with cargo.
Suddenly, the titan moves towards me, jumping from roof to roof. I narrow my eyes and grab Berthold again, holding the unconscious man as I draw a sword and hold the blade to his neck.
"Try and come closer, I dare you!" I glower as the titan lands in front of me. "One move to take him and I'll slit his throat," I warn, glaring daggers at the man the titan is carrying.
He doesn’t look older than his late twenties, but with his beard it's hard to tell. His limbs are all severed, just like Berthold's are at the moment, and his blond hair billows from the steam blowing upwards from his injuries.
Upon closer inspection I can see the marks that start from his eyes, resembling the ones I get after I leave my titan form.
This must be the beast titan then.
That thought alone makes me press the edge of my sword harder to Berthold's neck.
The man leans forward slightly, eyes wide. "I found you," he utters. "Eren Jaeger, right?"
I grit my teeth at the question, slicing into Berthold's neck so this guy knows I'm serious about killing him.
"You don’t look a thing like your father," he says blankly.
That makes me pause. "...What?"
"Believe me, Eren, I get it. I know how you feel." The man says, staring at me with an earnest expression. "Both of us are just victims of your father. I'm sorry, but he's brainwashed you."
The fuck? Who is this bastard?
"What are you talking about?" I ask lowly.
Before he can say anything, something catches his attention at the top of the wall, and I glance over my shoulder. Captain Levi is standing there, covered in blood that's streaming off him.
The blond man grunts in frustration, muttering something I can’t hear. He then turns his attention back to me, glancing at the man I still have under my sword.
"I'm sorry, Berthold, but this is the end for you." He meets me eyes as the titan carrying him turns to leave. "Eren, someday I'll come back and save you from this." he tells me before the titan takes off, leaping back over the rooftops.
