"Don't die, Gramps..." I whimpered, holding my tears back. "You can't die."
"Silly child..." Gramps chuckled weakly, gazing at the ceiling with a wistful look. "Everybody dies."
A quiet sob escaped me as I quickly wiped away my tears. I shook my head and forced a smile, holding Gramps' hand tightly. "You'll get well, won't you? You'll come to Saitama to watch me..."
He let out a sigh, smiling sadly. "Gramps...Gramps will be with you at Saitama. I will always be there for you."
His grip gradually loosened and his pulse grew weaker, slowly slipping away. In panic, I tightened my fingers around his hand and leaned forward, feeling a huge swell in my throat.
"G-Gramps!"
"June..." He mumbled weakly, his eyes slowly closing. "Always remember..."
"Gramps, don't sleep..."
"Be proud of who you are; be confident..." He struggled to keep his eyes open, his hands trembling. "Never, ever lose faith..."
Silence took over the room as Gramps stopped before he finished his sentence, closing his eyes. His hand stopped trembling.
"I-In yourself." I choked, sobbing uncontrollably as Dad wrapped his arms around me, his eyes red and slightly swollen.
"It's okay, June. G-Gramps will always be with you." He muttered, his voice trembling.
But no matter what they said, I remained inconsolable.
I...
"June!"
Huh?
"June, are you alright?"
I struggled to open my eyes, seeing Marcia's face above my head. "Wha..?"
"You were crying in your sleep!" said Marcia as she sat beside me on my bed, stroking my back. "Are you okay?"
I touched my face and noticed that it was slightly damp and sticky and my eyes felt wet and swollen. "Yeah, I'm fine...sorry for worrying you."
She got up and switched on the main light, fetching a glass of warm water and handed it to me.
"Thanks, Marcy..." I took a sip, smiling at her reassuringly.
"Feeling better?"
"Yeah." I put the glass down on the side drawer, drawing my knees in, hugging them. "I...I dreamt about my grandpa."
"Oh..." Marcia nodded slowly, looking at me quietly. "I'm sorry."
"I'm fine, don't worry about me!" I shook my head. "I just...miss him sometimes."
"Your grandpa...I'm sure he was a cool guy."
"He was." I grinned and rested my chin in between my knees. "I wouldn't be skating if not for him."
"Wow."
"I won't let him down at Worlds."
"Mmhm..." Marcia nodded off, her eyelids struggling to keep open.
"Go to sleep." I tapped her forehead and laughed, pulling the blanket over myself.
"Goodnight, Junny."
