The moment Damian entered class the next day, the atmosphere seemed eerily uncomfortable. For starters, many people were whispering things in each other's ears and Damian frowned as he saw his peers gasp and see their eyes widen in shock as they went on whispering amongst themselves.
Emile was the first to speak up "Something feels odd, Bossman"
"Yeah, your usual crowd of girls aren't surrounding you today," Erwin chided,
"Whatever, I don't care about them" scoffed Damian
"As always! Expected from our bossman!" Emile said pridefully as they made their way to the back of the class. As always, or rather, this had become a daily obligation to which he did not have the honour of providing his plebiscite, he began to trudge along the staircase and sit next to Natalia Ruefield.
Natalia was a pretty girl, she was kind and had lustrous brunette princess curls falling to her face which put everyone in despair. Not to mention, the Ruefield family, if not as influential, was quite as prominent as the Desmond or Blackbell families. His brother, Demetrius had dated her older sister, Simone Ruefield, in the past, though he didn't understand how that'd even worked for months, considering his brother never made it past understanding why couples gave one another gifts on valentine's day. He had a feeling that Demetrius was probably forced into the relationship and wouldn't have done it on his own accord.
However it had made their father quite happy, and Damian was ever so determined to keep in contact with Natalia just for that very instance of praise. The thought of the words "Impressive, Damian" rang in his ears like bells chiming in heaven. Besides, it helped him keep his mind off of shrimpy–er–Anya Forger.
Though since a few days back, his thoughts would always again travel back to Anya. How strange had it been to see her cry and mumble the same thing over and over, had she gone mad or something? What could she have possibly meant to say by telling him that her pops was gone? Did he actually die?
Just as if right on cue, in entered Becky Blackbell with her nose stuck up in the air, she stylishly flipped her hair and strangely smelled today like panna cotta. Damian recognised the scent: De Beauvoir, eau de parfum pour les femmes. It was the same perfume his mother used.
Behind her followed Anya. Damian looked at her, infuriated before looking away as heat flowed in his entire face, he did not need people knowing he was entirely flushed just because of a stupid commoner. Not one bit.
Suddenly, the entire class burst into malicious laughter, Becky looked at everyone with a confused glance and Anya made a deadpan expression and pursed her lips, unamused.
Damian, Emile and Erwin were equally confused and looked at one another before Natalia sneered "Look! It's the fatherless freak!"
There was a continuity of laughter and Becky turned around to face Anya, who's head hung low and looked pale, as if she'd seen a ghost.
Damian felt something sink into his stomach really badly, as if someone had blown a punch to his gut, brutally, he felt his lungs plummet as he looked at his seatmate in shock.
"Why are you guys laughing?! Anya isn't a fatherless freak!" Becky retaliated but Anya stood still, her lips mum, she couldn't speak nor hear and had merged into the shadows, unaware of where to go and what to do. She stood frozen.
"You didn't even tell your best friend Anya?! How unfortunate!" One of Natalia's minions, Anna, laughed cruelly, "We know everything!"
"Anya," Becky was mad but her voice softened as she turned to her best friend "what are they saying?" But Anya was too busy over analyzing everything. She decidedly read Damian's mind for some clues,
Anya told me about this, she'll think its my–
"Anya asked you not to say anything..." she mumbled softly, her eyes were welling up with tears slowly and steadily, like a bucket kept under a faucet, the water being ready to flow anytime. "You told the whole class what Anya told you?!"
Becky looked at her friend in perplexion and disbelief but quickly snapped back from her trance. "Anya–it wasnt me–" Damian sputtered
"So how do they know what I told you?!" cried Anya "Anya hates you more than she hates papa! Anya never wants to see sy-on boy again!" and with that she ran out of the class.
Damian felt as though his worst nightmares were coming true, as if his entire perfectly built world was shattering into pieces. Each piece being more unretrievable than the next, he watched as Becky glared at everyone before going after Anya and he watched as she disappeared out of his sight.
After that day, Anya was subject to constant bullying and she ignored Damian completely. No matter how many times he'd approached her, she'd run away and hide and it way all his fault, he'd realised in guilt, if he hadn't asked her questions to provoke her, they wouldn't have been in this situation. Now Anya hated him, she dreaded his presence and Damian did not blame her one bit.
