Mia had spent seventeen years under the suffocating love of four parents. They were all different—her mother Callie, bold and unapologetic; Arizona, the kind but firm voice of reason; Lexie, the peacemaker; and then there was Mark. Mark Sloan, the overprotective, cocky, and annoyingly right father she couldn't escape. But tonight, as she introduced James, she saw it—the moment of pure, unfiltered panic in Mark's eyes. She should have known better than to expect them to take this well. James stood beside her, polite and composed, every bit the confident older man they feared. He had already shaken hands with Callie and exchanged small talk with Arizona, but the minute her father's eyes locked onto him, the atmosphere had shifted.

"So, James," Mark said, arms crossed over his chest, voice smooth but loaded. "How old are you again?"

"Twenty-eight," James answered without hesitation—dead silence.

Mark's jaw clenched. "You realise my daughter is seventeen, right?"

"I do." James didn't waver.

Mia felt her stomach twist. "Dad," she warned, voice low, defensive.

"No," Mark cut in, his blue eyes flashing. "No, because I need to understand how a grown man looks at my teenage daughter and thinks that's okay."

Mia stepped forward, her heart pounding. "I'm not a child, Dad. I can make my own choices."

"That's debatable," Mark shot back, his voice sharp.

Callie, who had been silent until now, let out a slow breath. "Mia... honey, this is a lot to process." Her voice was measured, but Mia could see the tension in her mother's jaw. "You're still in high school. He's nearly thirty."

Arizona's voice was softer but no less urgent. "This kind of age gap, at this point in your life—it isn't just about love, Mia. There's a power imbalance. That's what scares us."

Mia felt the heat rising in her chest. "You're acting like he's manipulating me or something. He respects me. He listens to me. He treats me better than any guy my age ever could. And last time I checked Dad you and Lex aren't exactly a year apart, are you? 16 years bit more than 10"

Mark let out a dry, humourless laugh. "Yeah, I bet he does. Guys his age? They know exactly what to say to get what they want. And I and Lexie are different we got together when we were both grown adults"

Mia's throat tightened. "A) That's disgusting. B) So what did you want me to wait 7 months till I'm 18 then you'll have no issue?"

"What's disgusting," Mark countered, voice like steel, "is that you don't see how much danger you're putting yourself in."

"I'm not in danger," Mia snapped, her voice rising. "You just can't stand the fact that I don't need your permission. I don't need your approval."

Lexie, silent until now, finally stepped in. "Mia... maybe just slow down. You've only been dating a few months. Maybe give us some time to—"

"No," Mia cut her off, her voice cracking. "No, because it doesn't matter how much time I give you. You've already made up your mind. You'll never trust me to make my own choices. And I'm so sick of it."

Mark's hands were shaking at his sides, his mind racing. Sloan Riley. The same words, the same defiance in her voice, the same determination to prove she was an adult when she wasn't. He had already failed once. He wasn't about to do it again.

"You're seventeen, Mia," Mark said, his voice quieter but no less intense. "You think you have everything figured out, but you don't. And when it all comes crashing down, when you realize you were just another phase to him, we're the ones who will have to pick up the pieces."

Mia's chest ached. She had never seen her father like this—so desperate, so scaredBut she was scared too. Scared that if she stayed in this house any longer, she would never escape their shadows. Her voice was barely above a whisper. "I love him." Mark inhaled sharply like she had physically struck him. Arizona blinked rapidly, her lips parting slightly as if she was going to say something, but Callie beat her to it.

"Are you serious?" Callie's voice was sharp, laced with something close to panic. "Mia, you don't even know what love is yet."

Mia shook her head, swallowing the lump in her throat. "I knew this was pointless."

And then, she turned to James. His presence was steady beside her, a grounding force. She had thought that introducing him to her family would make things easier—that maybe, just maybe, they would trust her. She had been wrong. She turned back to her parents, her gaze burning. "I'm leaving." The words ripped through the room, and suddenly, everything was too loud and too quiet at the same time.

Lexie paled. "Mia—"

Mark stepped forward, panic rising in his throat. "No. You are not leaving."

Mia's hands clenched into fists. "Yes, I am."

Mark's voice was deadly quiet now. "If you walk out that door with him, I don't know if I can forgive you for it." A beat of silence.

Callie's voice wavered. "Mark—"

"No," Mark cut her off, eyes locked onto his daughter. "I need her to understand that this is a choice. And once she makes it, there's no taking it back." Mia's heart pounded. She knew this was a test. She knew that if she left, she wouldn't just be leaving. She would be breaking something. But she had already made up her mind. With one last glance at her mother's—Callie's silent heartbreak, Arizona's thinly veiled fear—she turned and walked to the door. Lexie let out a small, broken sound. And then— Mark's voice, barely above a whisper.

"Don't do this, Mia." She hesitated. Just for a second. But James' hand was on the small of her back, steady, guiding. She didn't turn around. The door closed behind her. And suddenly, the house felt empty.
