Chapter 22 || He's Alive
"Has she tired herself out?" Kakashi's quiet tone breaks the soft silence of the bedroom they had been placed in. A sort of medical room for the two who had been unconscious on arrival. Moonlight filtered through the window, high enough in the sky to cast a light across the entire room.
Sasuke stared into the floor with an intense gaze, his dark eyebrows furrowed deeply, his arm wrapped around the dark haired girl who was now quiet to stop her from falling too roughly.
The silver haired man truly felt for the boy in that moment, understanding the heavy weight he had to be feeling in his heart.
".. yeah." He mumbled absently, Nervously. As if his voice would be enough to cause her to stir and be the cause of another breakdown.
Tsunami, the daughter of the bridge builder, who had come to check on all the commotion now sat quietly, scrubbing the vomit from the floor. Her own expression distraught.
"I know I shouldn't pry..." She spoke up meekly, "but what happened to her brother?"
The frantic rambling of the dark haired girl had been loud enough for the entire house to hear, the two heavy sleepers of the team managed to sleep through it all, leaving the weight of the situation to the three in the room.
Kakashi sighed tiredly. "As far as we know, he's missing." He speaks tightly.
Sasuke's head lifts, "you knew about this?" He questions roughly, still keeping his voice low.
Kakashi's eyes narrowed not particularly enjoying the tone Sasuke had used to ask his question. "She doesn't talk about him often." He fills in, deciding to let it slide just this once.
"The poor little thing." Tsunami frowns. "It sounds like she's been bottling it all up."
Sasuke's expression was unreadable, completely lost in thought. Ace to him had always been the same as himself. A person who had lost their family in just one tragic day.
Now, he didn't know what to think.
He slowly begins lowering the girl back down onto her sleeping mat, using care not to jostle her too much before standing up and examining his shirt, holding in a grimace at the sight. Tears and snot covering the fabric on his chest.
"Don't hold it against her." Kakashi sighs, "her body is still working through her illness."
Sasuke says nothing in return, just stopping to look around at the mess the girl had created. She had been so cold as he carried her here he had to keep checking her breathing just to make sure she was alive. The team had no idea that she was so sick, sure she had seemed a little off, but when she collapsed amidst the battle, it was like the world held its breath.
All this time he had thought that when she looked at him all she could see was Itachi. The man that took everything away from them both. But reality was... Sadder? Relieving? He couldn't tell exactly what he felt about the situation.
He had thought that she was filled with hate at the sight of him. Instead all this time, she was grieving, Picturing him as her own brother and he'd had no idea.
"I'm going to go change." He justified himself, feeling as if he had to announce his intentions before he was allowed to leave the girl behind.
Kakashi didn't bat an eye as the young boy weaved his way out the door, sliding it shut behind him softly, still being cautious.
Just the sound of Tsunami gently scrubbing at the floor filled the room, the water splashing gently each time she dipps her brush into the bucket she had prepared.
