Chapter 21 || Another Boy, Another Mask

The fight blurred around Ace's vision as mist fell in a thick sheet of white around the road they had been travelling. It filled her lungs with a heavy wet and dreadful feeling, infused with the chakra of their enemy. She wanted nothing more than to cough it all up, but instead her throat tightened, trapping it in her chest.

It left her dizzy, her head spinning with each breath she took. Everything moved around her with trails, she was seeing double.

Her feet planted behind Tazuna the bridge builder her back leaning gently against his own. While she might look ready to leap into action, mentally she felt overwhelmed. She couldn't see straight, barely able to tell who was standing at her side.

Her eyes closed instinctively, taking a level of stimulation away from the barrage of senses being thrown at her. Instead focusing solely on what she could feel.

The cling of moisture on her skin, the gentle breeze flowing from the body of water nearby, the radiating warmth of Naruto's presence. In fact, she could feel everyone's presence.

Her eyebrows furrowed as another dizzying level of input was injected into her brain. The sense of her teammates surrounding her, each of their souls surrounding her.

She could never notice it without the looming presence of Zabuza's Chakra surrounding them, but she could pinpoint exactly where it faltered, being filled with the different warmths of her teammates. Naruto was the only one she could pinpoint to an exact spot, his presence giant against Zabuza's encompassing chill.

"Ace!" A sudden shout caught her attention. Her eyes snapping open just in time for her to block an oncoming attack. She raised her kunai up, the clash of metal grating violently. The sheer force of the blow pushing her backwards and in turn knocking the bridge builder off his balance, the man stumbling forward into Sasuke.

Zabuza was strong. Much stronger than her.

Dread filled her core at the thought, glancing between her teammates around her. Naruto to her left and Sakura to her right. There was no way they could beat him here.

Just as that feeling of hopelessness swam through her, a loud clash broke through her doom. Kakashi!

Her sensei didn't look back as he deflected the Zabuza clones blow. "I won't let anything happen to you guys" his calm and collected tone made the four kids feel a lot less dire in their situation.

A sinister chuckle echoes after kakashi's words, Zabuza's deep and gravelly voice chiming in after, "We'll see how long that lasts."

The two fought against each other hard from that moment forward, the clashing of metal and shouting filling the air as the four kids kept the bridge builder safe, protecting every angle of the man.

Ace's vision swam, the feeling of her blood throbbing in her temples giving her a hard to ignore headache.

It was clear now that she wasn't seasick at all. She had been poisoned. She didn't know when, and she didn't know where, but there was poison in her system working its way through her body

She was fighting two battles at once.

A physical fight, keeping alert enough to destroy any of Zabuza's clones that broke past kakashi's side of the battle. Clones that still held a remarkable amount of strength.

And the fight against her body, which was begging her to stop moving, to curl up into a ball and fall asleep. With every passing second she felt this fight getting harder and harder to win.
Her teammates spoke urgently to eachother behind her, hushed and rapid words that she couldn't even begin to grasp.
