Chapter 17 || Weak Losers

The four kids all sat around the wooden beams in various stages of depression. Naruto at the worst, with his face planted firmly face down in the mud and a groaning rumble coming from his chest. Sakura had a few tears in her eyes, her gaze locked on the ground in front of her shamefully.

Ace and Sasuke shared a similar brooding silence, sat next to eachother as near mirror images of the other, their hands both clasped in front of their faces and eyes sharp, glaring ahead.

They had lost. Not a single one of them managed to get a bell.

Ace's plan never came to its full fruition, the alarm clock Kakashi had set to signal the end of the trial ringing out long before she had managed to even get close. Though now seeing their sensei's strength as a ninja, she doubted she would have been able to get one, even if her plan had played out perfectly.

Her mind raced, thinking over every little detail of her plan that could be adjusted, ways that she could've twisted it to make it all work out.

The plan itself wasn't bad.

Each step had been very carefully thought out, even if some of them had backfired or fizzled out.

Her eyes drifted to her hands curiously, the Jutsu she had altered to work with her chakra flow was something she had down to near perfection, but for some reason she was back to square one. Why?

The angry red lines along her fingers stood out brightly against her pale complexion. They had spread farther after her fight with Nia. Had these marks somehow affected her chakra?

"Well. You guys suck." Kakashi stated bluntly, leaning casually against his own wooden beam. His lazy gaze trained on the group of kids below him.

"Aaaaagh!" Naruto screamed into the dirt "we had it! We were so close!" He continued, his voice muffled by the ground.

Sasuke let out a huff, crossing his arms over his chest and looking off to the side defiantly.

Ace cocked an eyebrow up at her new sensei, a small scowl in her expression. "Yeah well, your mum" she countered weakly, sticking her tongue out. Her ego had been bruised enough without Kakashi's sass there to rub it in.

Kakashi shook his head minutely, choosing to ignore her rather than entertain it. "Lucky for you guys, I'm here to help you get better." He smiles

The four kids all turned their gaze to the man, Naruto finally sitting up, his legs crossed immaturely as he grimaced. "You can't even show up to training on time, how are we supposed to trust that!" He calls out, pointing at Kakashi accusatorily.

"He just beat the snot out of us Naruto!" Sakura growls, raising her fist to prepare a hit, her typical rage shining for just a moment. "We're nowhere near his level!" She exclaimed.

"Sakura is right Naruto. We could learn a lot from a strong Jonin like him." Sasuke agrees reluctantly with an edge to his voice that made the pink haired girl swoon.

Ace nodded sagely, agreeing with her two new teammates. "Maybe he could learn something from us too, you never know" she joked, "like how to be on time." She gestured to Naruto, calling back to his earlier words.

"Alright that's enough out of you." Kakashi rolled his visible eye. "Quite the smart one aren't you." He jeered

A flicker of amusement welled in her chest, "Which is it, am I smart or do I suck?" She questioned her all knowing sensei.

"Those aren't mutually exclusive. You can be both." He responded monotonously.

"Ugh! Can you just tell us if we pass or not and send us on our way? I'm starving over here!" Naruto groans, his stomach rumbling loudly for emphasis.

the group looked up to their sensei expectantly waiting for the answer with baited breath.

Kakashi nodded, pushing off his pole to stand in front of the kids with an air of authority. "The point of this test was to see your strategic thinking." he explains, thinking back to the entirety of the test.

"Sakura and Ace. Team girl. You showed a good amount of forethought, however, you lacked the initiative." He started, looking over at the girls, who were sat side by side between the two boys.
"Had you come to seek me out rather than waste your time waiting, you would have been able to adjust for the hiccups in your plan and figure out a better course of action." He advised wisely.

"You two work well together." He complimented "You pass."

The two girls brightened, looking to eachother with beaming grins before swinging their hands together in a crisp high five.

"Next, Naruto and Sasuke. Team boy. You did about as well as I expected." He sweatdropped, glancing at the scuffs of dirt coating the two. "You showed good initiative, but lacked in every other sense." He summarised.
"You guys still don't seem to understand the teamwork part of being a ninja." He sassed, narrowing his eyes at the two.

"Hey! We nearly had you!" Naruto exclaims.

Sasuke puffs his chest in agreement, nodding his head to himself.

"If we had two more minutes we would've won" Naruto states a sour look on his face at the thought.

"I had the bell in my hand." Sasuke adds.

"So close yet so far" Kakashi sarcastically adds with a dramatic sigh. "Rules are rules, you two lost The challenge just like the other two."

"However, for your quick thinking in intervening between our fight to aid your comrades, even when pitted against eachother. You pass." He smiles

Naruto lets out a loud cheer, and Sasuke brightens as well, a smirk crossing his face.

The two bump their fists together in celebration, each taking a moment to appreciate the win.

"All of you are on the same level, and that's good, some healthy competition never hurt anybody." Kakashi claps.

"Now... Welcome to the team Ace!" Kakashi smiles, a genuine smile. His arms open to present his verdict, almost as if putting a spotlight on the girl.

"Welcome Ace!" Sakura smiles from beside the dark haired girl, a glow to her smile that Ace had never seen before from the oink haired girl. A warm and friendly glow.

"Yeah! Ace! We're teammates now!" Naruto exclaims, leaning past Sasuke to wrap and arm around his friend happily.

Sasuke places a firm hand on Ace's shoulder through Naruto's grasp "Welcome to the team." He smirks.

She grinned at the group around her. Feeling the unity of a real team. Like family, a warm feeling of belonging that she hadn't realised she had missed.
