I knew something was wrong as I watched my house burn to the ground in front of me. Pierce had excused himself, citing that he wanted to look into what happened here. I didn’t believe a word he said. Some people had gathered to watch what was happening. No one moved. No one tried to save the house because we all knew it would be futile. I also knew the human was inside, probably dead by now from the smoke or the fire itself. But the moment my wolf became restless, I bolted out of the place towards the pack house.“You can’t get inside,” Sybil’s friend said. I had forgotten her name, and I hated that she was standing in my way.
“Get out of my way.” I could feel it in my gut. Something was terribly wrong here. We hadn’t mated, but the connection was there. Besides, my wolf wouldn’t lie to me about it. If he said she was in trouble, then she was in trouble.
“No one is allowed to enter.” Growling, I planned to push her aside, but she knew my next plan and got out of the way. I bounded up the stairs, letting my wolf guide me into finding her. When I reached the alpha’s office. I tried opening it, but it didn’t budge and it’s not like they could hear me if I knocked. I pulled back, slamming my leg into the wood. It fell to the floor with a thud. I entered, only to come face to face with Damien Silverclaw and a petrified Sybil. In all the years I had known her, I’ve never seen her that terrified. Fear bled through her eyes, her hands trembled like the rest of her body. My eyes moved from her head to her shoulders, inspecting her to see if there was any injury. They stopped at her stomach. There was a dagger there and blood painting the t-shirt she wore, making a trail until it reached her feet and settled into a pool.
Anger blinded me painting the cream white walls of the office in red. Without thinking about it, I launched myself at the bastard. He was a threat. He hurt her, and that didn’t sit well with both me and my wolf. I didn’t even get to touch him. Sybil moved so fast that she stood between me and the alpha of all alphas. The bastard grinned, as if this was interesting to him. I wondered why when he had lived so long and had witnessed it all.
“I thought you didn’t have a mate.” The grin widened as he made the connection.
“He’s not,” she said. Her breathing was harsh, probably because of the dagger piercing her flesh. Why hadn’t she removed it yet? She would be healed by now.
“I already told you not to lie to me. It’s clear you two are mates. And I’ve heard about you, too.” He craned his neck to the left, his cold eyes landing on me.
“I’m not…”
“Sybil, stop it.” It was plain to see that he knew and if she continued to lie to him, who knows what he might do? She was protecting me, yes, but agitating the man in front of us seemed like a bad idea.
“Your mate knows best, Sybil. Don’t lie to me, I always find out.” He took a step towards her and I was quick to push her behind my back. She protested, but I held my ground.
“If I wanted to kill her, she would already be dead. I just wanted to say my goodbyes. I’ve duties to attend to, which means I can’t stay here for long.” This time, Sybil pushed me away. She looked eager to do so. To put herself between me and the crazy fellow.
“Take care. There’s a lot going on against you, and you’re not aware of it. I would hate to lose a family member.” With that, he walked out of the room, leaving me with a stunned-looking Sybil. What the fuck did that mean? Family? Anyone knew that man didn’t have a family. He lived alone in his castle. He didn’t have a mate or children. So, what the hell was he saying?
Pushing those thoughts to the back of my mind, I walked towards Sybil. She still looked stunned, all colour drained from her face while her hand clutched her stomach.
