“Don’t make a sound,” I whispered to the man, my hand pressed tightly against his mouth. He thrashed, and I pressed the tip of my danger to his ribs. “Or it will be your last,” I finished. He stiffened, probably from my threat or the dagger pressed to his side. Or perhaps a bit of both. Standing there, I listened to the others. Their voices fading in the distance. Still, I waited, unmoving, with the human in my hold. One mistake could cost me so much here.We both turned sharply to our left as footsteps bounded towards us. I relaxed when I realised it was Sybil running towards us in a big shirt that swallowed her.
“You got him,” she said, inspecting the human closely.
“Is that why you’re here? You didn’t think I would get the job done?”
“I was worried about you.”
“It’s the same thing. How many times do I need to tell you I can take care of myself?”
“Men and their ego,” she mumbled under their breath, thinking I couldn’t hear her. She was still inspecting the human with the same interest as before. A growl rose from my chest when I remembered her conversation with that other wolf she considered a friend a lifetime ago.
“I didn’t mean anything by it…” She raised her hands to the sky in surrender. She should be worried about her source of information. My wolf wanted to crush him where he stood, and I imagined how easy it could be.
“I hope you do, or else. I dug the dagger into the man’s side. His clothes prevented me from piercing his skin, but if there were no barrier, I could easily draw blood.
“If you dare…” she started, failing to finish her little threat. What’s the worst she could do? “Release him,” she demanded. I did as she said. It’s not like I had any interest in holding the little human. He stank, like he hadn’t taken a bath in years.
I saw his next move before he even opened his mouth. Instinctively, I used the hilt of my dagger, connecting it with the back of his head. He fell to the ground with a thud.
“What have you done?”
“He was about to scream.”
“You didn’t have to knock him unconscious!” She crouched down to the unconscious human, flipping him over.
“He was about to scream.” I repeated.
“That doesn’t matter! You’re going to carry him.”
“Whatever,” I said, grabbing the man and yanking him up using his hands. His head rolled over.
“Do you have any idea how fragile they are?”
“I’ve heard.” I placed the human on my shoulder and we started off for the pack house.
“Do you think it’s okay to take him to the pack? I think it will freak the people out. Humans have done worse to our kind.”
“Is there somewhere else we can take him?”
“Of course not. Taking him there will mean we’ve to explain where we found him. I can’t let the people know that we captured a human.”
“We will keep him in my basement, then.”
“Will that be okay with you?” She asked. I wonder what the problem could be. I was just keeping the human, and I had no desire to interact with him.
Once we reached my house, I locked the unconscious man in the basement and went upstairs to see Sybil leaning against the wall, a worried expression on her face.
“What is it?”
“Do you think he will talk?”
“He will. I will drive it out of him.”
