Shishupal had been invited into the state.

And that shameless insect had dared to accept the invitation and he had come with his pre-teen daughter. His wife and son were back at the palace in Chedi, waiting for him to return with a wife.

Mihira wanted to pull her hair out. The moment she had seen the royal carriages entering the gates of the palace, Mihira had glared ferociously at Rukmanetra. Her fury was useless, however, because he was already busy with being the perfect fucking prince who had to welcome the daughter of the man his sister was supposed to be betrothed to!

Eklavya slapped her arm, when he noticed. "Stop being a goddamn menace, rude thing."

"I want to make his wife a widow, Wild boy. And you expect me to be fine with them wishing to marry Princess Rukmini?" Mihira hissed at him.

Eklavya sighed,"Oh, for the last time, we cannot do anything about it! Stop sulking about things beyond your control."

Mihira smiled and swallowed the words she wished to say. If Mihira was going to live till the time, she would definitely do everything in her power to control the supposed wedding.

And she had no intention of dying yet. Not before she met Krishna and asked him exactly why did he dump her in a river in Chedi of all places? Did he really hate her that much?

Mihira took a deep breath and walked away from the welcoming party, humming a song under her breath.

"May you never return,
To chains that burn your soul

May you never return to the abode of everything you've known.
May you colour yourself and leave;

May you never return to me."

"You know we would have never met, if Princess Rukmini did not advocate for my job at the palace." Mihira said, stepping beside Rukmanetra in the Gauri temple, while Rukmini said her prayers.

(Rukmini had sent her a conspirational wink earlier and Mihira understood that it was her temporary duty to distract the prince so that Rukmini may send the letter of her confession to Dwarka, by the hands of the priest of the temple.

And well, Mihira had never believed in disobeying her Cosmic Mother.)

He glared at her out of the corner of his eyes. "I do not need to hear about that subject, Mihira."

Mihira raised her eyebrows and held her hands up in surrender. "As you wish, Rukmanetra. I shall stay silent on the matters of righteousness, just as you prefer yourself to be."

He groaned under his breath,"Oh, for the sake of—" He did not complete the sentence, instead preferring to let out a deep breath and sigh. "Can you at least try to not make me cuss in a temple, Mihira?"

"I don't know, Rukmanetra. Can you try to tell me that you saw a man who has a pre-teen daughter and you still want your only sister to marry him and become the second, forgotten, Queen of a tainted state?" Mihira asked, purposely being annoying in her tone. She was tired of being angry but she could not let go of the way he seemed to be on the fence— knowing he was wrong and yet continuing to support the decision of his elder brother.
