Whenever my relatives try to make me become a "traditional Indian girl", I seriously want to cut a bitch.
Okay, so I'm referring to my grandparents on my dad's side. They're from the rural part of India, so they are still close-minded about a lot of the things that have been going on in the world. Hell, they don't even know what a fucking microwave is. But their views about women are very, very, very narrow and outdated.
First off, my grandmother believes that women shouldn't have jobs. If they have jobs, she believes that it's their husband's decision as to whether or not she's allowed to keep that job.
Secondly, my grandfather believes that the daughter-in-laws should do the cooking and the cleaning, WHILE taking orders from them and taking care of children. I mean, my brother and I are old enough to do some stuff by ourselves, but we're the oldest cousins. My aunts have young children and they have to deal with so much bullshit.
Thirdly, my grandparents are obsessed with the skin color of their grandchildren. I am the oldest and the fairest of all of my cousins/relatives, so they prefer me over everybody else. However, my brother was born darker than me. Literally, when he was born, they made a comment that he was so "black".
Lastly, they're obsessed with me being traditional. They always want me to wear churidars and gold and it pisses me the fuck off. I was raised in America. You can't fucking expect me to turn around and make me wear things that I don't need/want to. I am fine with jeans and a t-shirt, thank you very much. I am not religious either, and they force me to participate in pujas and expect me to believe in everything.
I feel like this is just me. I really do hope someone can relate.
