Arianna was just about to give in to Mr. Benson's offer to stay the night when Travis said he would dry her home. Arianna waited in the car while Travis spoke in hushed voices with Mr. Benson. Arianna was just getting use to the fact that they were in fact father and son she just couldn't unsee the resemblance now and wondered how she missed that but the human mind was something she was still trying to comprehend. With a tap to the back and a wave directed at Arianna, Mr. Benson went back into the cottage and Travis joined her in the car.
You two are still the rare sight" Arianna confessed.
"Trust me I'm just trying to get used to it. The atmosphere at home is worse. Either Julianna isn't aware that I know the truth or she is a great pretender" Arianna ignored the fact that he addressed her with her first name.
"Why don't you just move to your dad's?"
"I wanted to but he said it's better if I was there. It would be easier to find clues"
"He is right. Most things inside the house. Where the questions lay so does the answers" they pulled a turn and the street lights reflected on Travis' face and for the first time Arianna could see hurt in his eyes. She didn't know if it was the lights playing around buthiseyes seemed to be glittering.
"I just can't stand it. I just can't believe she could do something like th at and still look me in the eye and call me her son. I can't even stay in the same room with her any more. But you know what I don't feel anger or resented at all, I don't know if your lessons actually paid off"
"Don't take my lessons lightly" Arianna joked.
"I just feel sad really sad"
"You don't have to act tough you know, why don't you spend the night? Our apartments are not fancy by I'm sure my grand ma and I can take your mind off sad thoughts for a night"
"That sounds like heaven, speaking of apartments don't you have enough saved to get a better place."
"Honestly, with everything going on moving isn't the problem but making sure I have someone to move with"
Travis let out a dry laugh ver aware it wasn't a joke "I think your grandma is already asleep I wouldn't want to bother her" Arianna hadn't noticed they had pulled up at her curb until Travis gestured to her grandma's window which was shut tight and the curtains dropped "and you should get some sleep too you aren't fully recovered yet" Arianna got out of the car and walked around.
"Thanks for the ride. I'll let you know if I figure out any leads, in the meantime keep your eyes and ears on alert. You are better off thinking no one is on your side in that house"
"Cut me some slack tonight I'm exhausted I just wanna go lie down and watch some of those terrible movies you left at my place"
"Such leisure. Alright then, just try and stay out of trouble what ever you go would definitely be used against you"
"I know I'll be extra careful" with a wave he was gone.
When Arianna dropped the phone the next day, she knew Travis was not being careful at all. In fact work on the street was that other people were the ones to be careful around him.
Arianna was able go catch the bus to BM motors because she hadn't showered. She didn't know if she was over exaggerating but most cars were also heading to the venue. The news had been true there was a press conference going on and Julianna was the one giving it. When Arianna arrived and saw the millions of people, she knew there was no doubt about it. After pushing through the crowd of sweaty bodies, camera, tripods that threatened to trip her a billion times, after what felt like hours, Arianna finally made it to the front door. Louis who was waiting inside, spoke to the security men through a walkie talkie and they let her through. She joined Louis who was standing at the back looking like a nervous wreck.
"How bad is it." Arianna asked
"Very bad" Louis said limiting his words so the crack in his voice wasn't noticeable
"Mr. Benson?"
"He is back at home playing dead. We will rendezvous later and discuss for now Arianna listen carefully this speech could be what makes or destroys us" while Louis looked like he supported the later, Arianna was sure this was best who ever went public first was the guilty one and when you bring reporters in, no matter how many are planted, you are exposing yourself wide open.
Arianna looked forward where all the cameras were focused, Julianna stood behind a podium looking as perfect as ever except for a small bandage that lined her forehead, Arianna was sure if Julianna had worn her hair down, it wouldn't have been obvious but that was the center of attention after all.
"...I stand her as a mother as well as a daughter bearing terrible news. As you all must know we are facing a terrible crisis which seeks to threaten the stand of BM motors. And you all here whether you be stakeholders, customers, promoters or even employees are all family yo us and deserve to know the truth and way forward. With my father suffering age dementia, and my son as the recent incident has proven is troubled" Julianna wiped an invisible tear, which was aimed at indicating the gash on her head "there are uncertain whispers going around as to who is running BM motors but I don't want your faith which has grown over the years to be threatened. While my father is recovering, I will be running things and as a temporary replacement for my son, while he is getting the help he needs, is Jasper, who grew up along side my son Travis and has received equal training" Juliana gestured attention to her left.
Jasper who Arianna had noticed standing Julianna at the far left end of the stage, gave a curt bow as millions of flashes illuminated his face. Arianna returned her gaze to Julianna to avoid making eye contact with him even by mistake, for some reason he made her skin crawl and not in a good way.
"So we humbly beg that you give us your support in this trying time as you have always done and we will serve you to the best of our ability" cameras clicked and random chatter filled the room. Arianna almost laughed at the game Julianna had chose to play. It was a pathetic one. This speech was drafted to be a two-sided sword, her PR didn't do a good job at all. The important fact were that, to their disadvantage, Travis's grandfather was clearly out of the picture, I mean sickness brought on by old age doesn't disappear the older you get. Secondly was that nobody would want a troubled person at a top especially one who would attack his own mother, the employees clearly won't accept Travis. But to their advantage, Julianna and Jasper won't be taken seriously as they would just be seem as temporary solutions, this although was hinging on the number of stakeholders on their side. What Julianna didn't understand was how fickle the human mind is. Arianna's years of experience gave Arianna the assurance that the press was never your friend no matter how much you try to control them. They were like parasites that eat on your loose threads until there is nothing left. But there was something Arianna was wrong about , the press were your friends and partners as long as you have nothing to hide.
Millions of people were trying to ask questions at the same time. Some have up just raising their hand, and pushed forward throwing their questions in the air and aiming their mics at Julianna. The moderator was trying desperately to calm the situation, from his expression he couldn't tell who were the reporters that were planted and those who weren't. In the midst of the confusion he did the most logical thing he could. Standing away from the crowd was lady with her hands raised from the confident look in her eye and the sweet smile he knew she was on his side.
"You the lady at the back we will take your question" he was very wrong, of course.
Dread lined Julianna's eyes but it was too late.
