As expected, Arianna didn't go to bed that morning and it wasn't because it was already day break but because her thoughts were louder than the voices of the aspiring K-pop idols that lived down the hall. She had scribbled all over her room on anything she could inscribe on. Her table cloth, calendar, sticky notes and even her bed linens as she restlessly paced her cramped room. Leads, questions, answers, anything that came to her mind at all about Carl. She had searched the internet and the black web and nothing popped up the he hadn't already said. Arianna knew the worst suspects are those who are an open book because they contain chapters and chapters of text you couldn't read. Finally running out of ink and places without inscriptions, she decided to take her bath and prepare for work.
After a cold shower, she put on a plaid suit and curled her hair. She couldn't seem to find anything cooped up in her room including the knitted socks she got for Christmas last year. If she wanted answers then the office was the place to go. After her coffee, she applied
Light make up, packed her essentials into her purse and went to abuela's room.
"Arianna my darling! You look stunning today. What's the occasion? Have you had breakfast?" Her grandmother chatted.
"I should ask you that, you are actually greeting me with words and not hits" Arianna responded pulling a seat for herself " but anyways, there is no occasion at least not yet but I feel celebration coming soon and no I haven't had breakfast but would love too"
"You are quite the talkative today" her grandmother said placing a pile of pancakes on the table." You know when you were little your father always said.."
"What do you need grandmother?" Arianna interrupted.
"How rude are you saying I can't take care of my granddaughter without needing something in return? You spoilt child" Arianna simply rolled her eyes and dug into her pancakes after spilling syrup over them. "But since you offered I do have one request"
"Shoot" Arianna was at the point where she wanted to pay back to her grandmother for taking her in because one thing she understood was not to underestimate the present.
"So while I was out with my girls" Arianna scoffed at 'girls' "I was telling them about how you work for BM Motors but they don't seem to believe since I couldn't provide any evidence."
"Get to the point abuela the bus will be here soon"
"Can I at least get one of her personal belonging?" Arianna spat out coffee
"You want me to steal from her!? How is that the least?"
"Oh stop being so dramatic you could just ask her for it. Fine an autograph then" Arianna cleared the table and left for work before her grandmother could come up with anything else. The office was the same as always but Arianna felt weird. She had a strange feeling like people were watching her and taking note of her every move. She walked faster to her office and took the stairs not the elevator. When she slammed the door open Jasper was waiting inside. He had on a grey sweatshirt with navy blue pants and sleeked his hair backward. The awkward atmosphere was gone.
"Good morning Arianna. Are you alright? you look startled" he looked behind her to confirm his suspicion of her being chased.
"Just eager to get to work" Arianna lied and settled behind her desk. She had just relaxed and was about to bury her self in work, for real this time, when the door popped open. It was Travis. She hadn't seen him in forever and didn't think she would in another decade.
"Arianna I need to see you" not stealing a glance at Jasper he was gone back into the hallway.
"Um I'll be back" Arianna said to Jasper not meeting his eyes as she slipped into the hall after Travis.
"Is something the matter sir?"
"Don't call me that"
"Why not you are my employer after all or should I kneel and beg you not to fire me for addressing you wrongly?"
"Not here" without warning he dragged Arianna down a familiar flight of rooms. When he finally popped a door open, he slipped them in looked left and right before shutting the door.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Tell you want? That I and your best friend deserve an apology?"
"Stop messing around! I know who you are Deville" Arianna sighed this wasn't her day. Her identity was being revealed faster than she anticipated.
"Did your mom tell you?"
"My mom knows?" Arianna face palmed that was a bad move. "Tell me now Arianna what is going on?! Who are you really? What are you doing here? And why do people want to get rid of you?" Arianna ears shot up at that. He had heard something. A new lead or more information.
"Listen to me carefully. I need to you tell me everything you've seen or heard without leaving any single piece out" Arianna quickly took out her phone from her suit jacket and set it to record.
"I'm not telling you anything until you tell me what the heck is going on!"
"Shhh" Arianna placed her hands on Travis lips shutting him up and stalked closely to the door. There were voices in the hallway not so far from where they were. Placing her ears on the door, Arianna listened
"I'm sick and tired of spoilt brats who feel so entitled. And Julianna putting her trust in some kid, so pathetic I want to get rid of them all at once but that would be too hasty. Just carry on with what I have assigned you. It may seem little but a tiny stone could cause a huge ripple in the ocean" Arianna's mind was spinning giving her a slight headache. She couldn't jump to conclusions as to what they were talking about even though Julianna was mentioned.
She looked back at Travis who looked confused as well. He walked to open the door but Arianna stopped him and shook her head. We heard footsteps go down the hall and one approaching the room. When Arianna loosened her grip, Travis tackled her and dragged the door open.
A million questions hung in the air but all those involved dwelt in the silence, two people in the room and one staring in from the hallway.
