Chapter Sixteen:
"Omg, stop." Tyler was kissing my neck, distracting me from my task of washing the dishes.
"Why, sweetheart?" His hands were resting on my waist.
"These need to be washed, and you're distracting me." The water splashed down the sink as I layed another plate in the strainer. I was almost done.
His warmth left me as he pulled away. I was grateful to be able to focus. I finished the rest and turned the water off. I turned around and ran into Tyler. He wrapped his arms around me.
We stood like that for a while, our arms around each other. His chin on my head, and my face in his chest. He pulled back and kissed my forehead.
"My sister wants to meet you before her wedding, so she suggested we go out to dinner. Tonight."
"Tonight? You couldn't have told me sooner?" I sighed.
"I just found out. Is tonight okay?" He looked concerned.
"Yeah, I just wish I'd have known sooner."
"I'm sorry, sweetheart."
"What if your sister doesn't like me?"
"She'll love you. I do." My heart melted as he said those words. I still haven't gotten used to him saying it.
"Okay. What time are we leaving?" I looked at the clock: 4:30.
"We're meeting at the restaurant at six o'clock." I detached myself from his embrace and headed to the bathroom.
"I'll be ready." I shut the bathroom door and got ready.
*****
"Alison! You're so beautiful. I can't believe my brother hasn't brought you to meet us sooner." Taylor pulled me in for a tight hug.
I hesitantly hugged her back, having just met her. She pulled back and gave me a warm smile. I smiled back. Tyler gave me a thumbs up from over her head.
Jim shook my hand and smiled at me. Taylor gave Tyler a hug and we sat in our seats.
"This is a really fancy restaurant." I whispered to Tyler.
"I know." He grabbed my hand. "She's very high-maintenance.""Well she should be. Jim probably takes her out to eat all the time. You take me out once in a blue moon." I playfully glared at him.
"Oh, whatever. We'll go out this weekend."
"Yay!"
"So, Alison." Taylor leaned forward. "What's your major?"
"Fashion."
"Where do you work?"
"I don't have a job right now. But I'm looking for one."
"If you don't have a job, how do you pay the bills? How do you plan to provide for my future nieces and nephews?"
"Whoa. First of all, I still help Tyler with the bills. And second of all, I don't plan on having children soon."
"How about you, Tyler? Do you plan on having children, soon?" Taylor turned to her brother.
Oh my god, is this the Spanish Inquisition?
"Uh, no. Taylor, calm down." Tyler and I shared a look.
"But I'm just trying to get to know her better."
"No, you're trying to interrogate her." Jim cut in.
I felt a wave of nausea. "Excuse me." I practically ran from the table to the restroom. I pushed into the first empty stall and the contents of my stomach emptied into the toilet. I heard a knock on the stall door and then Taylor pushed her way in.
"Are you okay?" Concern laced her voice.
"I'm fine, I guess I just ate something bad this morning." I didn't eat anything this morning.
"Ali, I think it's something other than bad food." I knew what she was hinting at, but I ignored the truth."No, it was expired food. It had to be." I counted the days in my head. "But I'm a week late, and I'm never late."
"Ali.."
"No. It was bad food. Let's go back to the guys." I cleaned my mouth and we headed back to the table.
"Hey, are you okay?" Tyler grabbed my hand as I sat down.
"Yeah, I'm great." I gave him a kiss. "Did you order for us?"
"Yes, it'll be here soon."
"Ali..." Taylor trailed off. I shot her a look.
"What?" Tyler looked between the both of us.
"Nothing." I smiled at him. "Let's eat."
*****
"Can we stop by the store before we go home, please?" I asked Tyler as we walked through the park. He swung our arms back and forth.
"Sure, did you wanna go now?" Tyler asked me.
"No, let's enjoy this a little longer." I skipped forward a little and he spun me back into his arms. I giggled. My dress flew threw the air.
"You're so beautiful." He kissed the top of my head. "I love you."
I looked into his eyes. "I love you, too." I pulled him towards the swings. "Come on. Push me."
I sat down. And held onto the chains. I felt his hands on my waist as he pulled me back and released me. My hair flew back behind me and I stuck my legs straight out. He pushed me a few more times and then sat on the swing next to mine. He kicked his legs back and forth until we were going at the same height and speed. I giggled at the grin on his face. "I feel like a little kid again."
"You are definitely not a little kid, sweetheart." His tone was very suggestive and I laughed.
"You need to get your head out of the gutter."
"Let's jump. On three." He suggested.
"One." I said.
"Two."
"Three." I flew off the swing and my bare feet hit the soft dirt. I ran forward a little so as not to lose my balance. Tyler came back toward me after he landed. A devilish glint in his eyes.
I giggled and took off the other way. I heard his footsteps chasing after me. He finally caught me and we fell to the grass. I laughed and rested my head against his chest. He tangled our legs together and folded my hands in his.
"This is perfect." He sighed. I agreed and we lay there for a while, content with just being together.
*****
I sat up before I could dose off. We were still at the park. The air started to cool down, so I pulled Tyler up with me. We started walking back to the car, hand in hand. He opened my door for me and I sat down. He got in and we drove off. We closed in on the convenience store down the road from our apartment. Tyler parked the car and I ran in. I grabbed two different pregnancy tests and a pack of gum. The cashier rung up my stuff. I paid and walked back to the car.
"Did you get what you needed?" Tyler asked me as we drove home.
"Yeah." I smiled at him. A bad feeling in my gut.
When we got to our apartment, I immediately went to the bathroom with the bag. Peeing on a stick is a very weird way to figure out if you're with child or not.
I sat on the edge of the tub, impatiently waiting for the results. Both the tests came back with the same answer.
