Author’s POV

They had just landed in India, in Chandigarh… and right now, they were all sitting in the Gill Mansion.

"Shrayn, you could’ve just informed us that one of your close friends is no more in this world. You know how much we all were tense. We thought… we thought you ran away because this marriage isn’t happiness for you,” her father, Mandeep, said. His voice carried the weight of days full of worry. “But trust us, we are marrying you off to Arthur for a reason.”

As he spoke, her eyes shifted to Arthur, who was sitting beside her—so calm, so damn attractive in that crisp three-piece suit, looking like the whole world could burn and he still wouldn’t blink.

And maybe… she did stare a second too long.

Arthur, sensing her gaze, turned his head to look at her and raised a brow.

“What? Just reply to them,” he whispered, his voice deep and composed, making her sigh.

“Daddy ji… I was just in a hurry, that’s why I didn’t inform you. And about the marriage,” she paused and looked around at everyone, her frustration rising, “then just tell me—what’s the reason? Why are you all so desperate to make both of us marry each other? You all know we hate each other—”

Before she could finish, Arthur chuckled under his breath and looked at her with amusement.

“When did I say I hate you, Sardarni?” he said aloud, his voice loud enough for everyone to hear yet oddly gentle, making her family look between the two with raised brows.

“Fine, okay, but I hate him. I. Hate. Him!” she repeated, emphasizing every word. “It’s enough reason for you all to stop this marriage! You can’t force me into a marriage where the girl is not ready. It’s illegal! If I want, I can file a complaint against all of you!”

Eknoor, who was lounging on the couch, rolled right off it, laughing hard while Arthur simply smirked. The rest of the family exchanged amused glances, raising their eyebrows at her little dramatic speech.

“Go on then. Who stopped you?” Ratnawar, Arthur’s grandfather, replied coolly.

“Ughhh! What’s with you all?! Just tell me the reason already!” she groaned, pulling at her sleeves in frustration.

“Look,” her grandfather Gurdas finally spoke, his voice firm yet heavy, “one day you have to go from this house. You are already 24, puttar. I also got married when I was 21. And about this marriage, you’ll know the reason once you’re with Arthur. For now, just know… we are doing this for your own good. And fine,” he sighed, “if you don’t want this marriage… we won’t force you.”

Shrayn’s head turned toward him, her heart suddenly heavier than before. The weight of his words, the way he said them—it wasn’t just a statement, it was a surrender.
