Chapter 6 - Fidelity and All that

"Thank you." I said softly as one more really heavy gift was passed to me.

After braving the press and entering the hall where the party was being held, I realized that Hamilton had brought me to our very own wedding reception. He didn't warn me, nor did he even bother to prepare me for what was in stock. But I had came here with a new attitude. I was determined to turn this around in my favor.

I merely accepted gift after gift with a pleasant smile on my face, while Nathan did all the talking. All I had to do was mutter thank you. After quite a while, my pumps were beginning to kill me. I didn't have much of a choice to do anything but keep standing there next to Hamilton. Looking around properly for the first time, I took in the size of the massive hall which was grandly decorated in a very professional way. This would most definitely be a dream wedding reception for any girl, including me. The only problem was that getting married to a monster was never a part of the dream wedding.

"Darling, Mr. Steveson just asked you something." Hamilton's voice cut through my thoughts as his elbow lightly bumped mine. I snapped my attention back to the present and my eyes met with those of the man right in front of me. I wondered exactly how long had he been standing there waiting.

"Pardon me, Mr. Steveson. This party is very overwhelming. I'm afraid I was a little lost for a moment there." I apologized with a sheepish smile and a good natured laugh which fooled even myself into thinking that I was happy to be there.

The short, plump man with a rather kind smile on his face gave me an understanding nod. Then, he too chuckled and turned to Hamilton. "Son, I am incredibly proud of you. I don't think you could have found yourself a better bride."

I kept the smile on my face as I discreetly tried to pull the front of my strapless dress up to avoid any indecent exposure. I had concluded a long time ago that strapless dresses were not meant for girls who had boobs like I did. It was a shame that Hamilton hadn't caught on yet.

After Mr. Steveson had left, another one of Hamilton's guest stepped towards me. He was tall, muscular and evil looking. His eyes were an icy blue which made me want to shiver and he was staring shamelessly at my chest. When he saw that I had noticed, he smirked at me and sent a nasty wink my way. It was clear that he hadn't come to offer Hamilton his congratulations, rather find a way to manipulate him. Instinctively, I took a step away from him and his uncomfortable staring.

Before he could come closer to me though, Hamilton cut through between us, shielding me from him. For one of the first times since I had known him, I was actually sincerely glad that Hamilton was there.

They were talking in hushed voices and though I tried to figure out what they were talking about, I couldn't pick up a single word. I had to be honest though, from where I was standing, it sounded more like they were growling at each other rather than actually speaking. Suddenly, the man turned and walked away from us, but not before casting a menacing glance in my direction.
