Chapter 39 - Divergent

"I am sorry?" The words slipped out of my mouth before I could comprehend what was really going on here. What had he just said? I was what? The hospital room suddenly seeming claustrophobic began squeezing me within its walls. Desperate, I looked at Sophie who had the same stricken look at her face.

I tried to pinch myself, thinking whether this was one of those dreams that seemed extremely real, and you began thinking they were real? It was a possibility wasn't it? I could still be unconscious and dreaming about things.

Really? What is this? Divergent?

"You...Are...Pregnant" the old doctor tried a much slower and softer tone this time as though explaining to retard. I still sat there uncomprehending what he was trying to tell me. I could see his lips move, but that was about what I saw or understood. My senses had nulled.

For a moment there I was certain I had lost any brain cell I had. But before fear could cloak my throat, the logical part of me revised a very important piece of memory to me and I broke out laughing hysterically.

The only two people who could have placed this sort of laughter to be that one full of nervousness were Nathan and Brittany. Neither one of them were here. However, I did not understand why I was nervous when clearly the doctor was wrong. Then looking at the doctor's confused expression, almost snapping at him at such a useless joke, I said, "That was not funny Doc. I had my periods six days ago." I said looking at him with triumph, but as I saw his expression I knew I hadn't won yet. He seemed like he had an answer to that too. "Don't tell me that some how I got pregnant in these six days and your test can already point that out too" I said sarcastically.

"Mrs. Hamilton" he said with some emphasis on those words as though reminding me who I was. "It is not unusual to have periods in the first few months of pregnancy. I have conducted three tests on you before telling you that you are quite positively pregnant."

Silence filled the room.

Seconds trickled by, and it was only then that those words began registering in my mind. Was that true? I tried looking at Sophie but she was of no help. The nervousness on my part was not completely unnecessary I realized. It felt like the news had a completely opposite effect on me. My blood in my veins slowed, as the time around me seemed lengthier than ever before. I could hear every single breath of both the doctor and Sophie.

What?!

You are pregnant Rose, my inner voice reminded me as I had forgotten what was it we were discussing. My mind zapped in thousand directions stretching its limits and understand what it was what pregnancy meant. A lone tear, unheard, unseen trickled down my left eye as I looked up to the doctor.

"I will you ladies some time alone" he said, almost chivalrously bowing his head slightly and walking out of the room. My mind had finally understood what was going on here. It had understood that there was another life growing inside me.

It was my baby growing inside me.

Instinctively, my hand went to touch my currently flat stomach. I closed my eyes, taking in the intensity of the moment as a smile broke on my face. Flashes of my future life swamped before me and happy tears began flowing down my eyes. They were images of Nathan and me with our child together. The most precious picture I had ever thought I have imagined.
