Chapter 50 - Veracity and Verisimilitude
There was no point wiping my tear, as those words send another batch of hot fresh tears and turned back not willing to let him see those.
'And now, I am not sure if this child is yours either'
I saw his rigid expression, as he let those words get to him, understand what I had just said. Completely stilled, I feared that he might break me with his bare hands. Just snap me into two, like a twig.
But he hadn't trusted me, and this wasn't something I was doing because I wanted to hurt him. I just couldn't make a conscious decision to play marriage with a man who did not trust me.
I now knew how deep the hurt had been. It had been deep enough for me to imagine a life without Nathan. It had been deep enough for me to think about raising our child alone without him. It has been deep, indeed.
As I turned away, taking a step towards my new future, his hands came to clamp over my wrist, as he tried to stop me there. Looking back at him, I opened my mouth to warn him to stay away from me, for not for another moment could I tolerate this pain anymore. See him in front of me and not be in his arms, it wasn't what my body or my heart could tolerate.
But before I could say anything, I heard a loud bang and both me and Nathan turned to look at what had just happened. His hands feel away from mine as we both looked at shocked at the source of the bang.
Sophie was standing trembling behind Chris, with a large wooden stick as Chris descended down to the floor immediately losing his conscience. The wood against the head shouldn't have created such a loud noise, but it had, which mean Sophie had hit Chris with all her might.
Shocked at what she had just done, the stick fell from her hand as she trembled harder and harder. Neither me not Nathan had thought she would be capable of this, but she had shocked us both. As I stood there, an urge to go and hug her swamped over me, but I held myself back. I was supposed to be going out, leaving him alone, not going back in.
"Check his breathing!" I half hissed back to Sophie who looked pale and colorless, I couldn't simply leave her in this condition. I knew Chris wasn't about to die from such an impact just because I had just witnessed the two brothers fighting, but I doubted Sophie knew that. She was after all away probably looking for this stick all this while, and was currently assuming that she had killed a man.
She slowly went down to her knees, with her hands shaking as she placed her fingers on his wrist feeling his pulse, at the same time inching away from him as though afraid that he would pounce on her any minute.
