Chapter 1

I watched dad key in the necessary button to open the top up and he ran out of the room, not before grabbing the gun he had laying by the door. I ran after him and just made it to the elevator in time for the doors to close and to ride up.

As we got closer and closer to the top my heart was beating a million miles per hour, what if this went wrong and these people were bad, or maybe even worse than that. Stop it Char they have women and children how bad could they really be? Suddenly my thought were interrupted by the ding that let us know the elevator was at the top and we were about to greet our visitors.

"Here," dad said as he held out a hand gun.

"What do we need this for?"

He didn't answer me as he loaded his gun and pointed it towards the group of people before us.

"Is there anybody infected?" my dad yelled.

"One of our group was," a guy in a sheriff's hat replied hesitantly, "he didn't make it."

My dad stepped forward, "Why are you here? What do you want?"

I stayed close behind him, but I didn't feel the need to raise my gun.

"A chance," the guy in the hat replied again, he must be like there leader or something.

"That's asking a lot these day," dad spoke again still making his way closer to the group, I continued to follow his way.

The leader was hesitant to reply, "I know."

We all just looked at one another, just thinking about what to say or do next. In the back of the group was a rough looking guy, hanging back from everyone just staring out the door, keeping watch. He finally turned around and scanned the area before going back to his post. This group must have been through hell and back but still feel a protectiveness around one another, a need to keep each other safe and out of harm's way. I find it honourable.

Dad took a few more steps before he spoke again, "You all submit to a blood test, that's the price of admission."

"We can do that," the leader spoke.

Dad finally lowered his gun and started to make his way over to the door, "You got stuff to bring in you do it now, once this door closes it stays closed."

The group ran out and moments later came back in with what looked like maybe one bag per person. They didn't have a lot with them. Two of the group closed the door behind them and dad scanned his ID card at the control panel.

"VI, seal the main entrance. Kill the power up here."

The leader approached dad, "Rick Grimes."

"Doctor Edwin Jenner," dad spoke hesitantly as he looked around, "That's my daughter Charlotte."

I hadn't moved from my spot, the group all looked at me I just smiled. I didn't really know what to say with that many eyes on me.

Dad started to make his way back to the elevator and the group just looked at one another.

"Come on," I smiled, turning around to follow my father.

Once we were all in the elevator it was very tight, we just all fit. Dad scanned his card and pressed the floor number and the elevator started to go down.

"Doctor's always go around packing heat like that?" I turned around to see it was the rough looking guy that finally spoke, I haven't heard him speak yet.

"Well, there were plenty left lying around, I familiarised myself," dad replied.

I looked back at the group and scanned them, I thought I'd lighten the mood a little bit and attempt humour, "Well you all look homeless enough," I pointed at the little boy of the group, "Except you, I'll have to keep an eye on you." Everyone had a little smile on their face, especially the little boy. They all look like they've been through hell, they will all feel better on a full stomach and a good night's sleep.
