The first explosion turned the sky orange.
The second shook the earth beneath my feet, even inside the cabin.
"Get up!" I shouted, already launching myself off the bed. Yaoyorozu and Jirou jumped to their feet, eyes wide with fear and adrenaline.
"Outside—what was that?!" Jirou asked, grabbing her equipment.
"We're under attack." I was already reaching for the metal cuffs I used for bending. My heart was pounding, my veins sparking with energy.
My quirk—no, my power—was screaming to be used.
"Wait, Aizawa said stay calm—" Yaoyorozu began, but I was already at the door.
"Aizawa can handle a lot, but if that was who I think it was, we need to move. Now."
Before either of them could stop me, I pushed open the door and stepped out into the cool night air. A wall of smoke was rising beyond the treeline. Flames flickered along the edges of the forest. And then—
A scream.
I bolted.
The woods were chaos.
I flew over fallen branches, my feet barely touching the ground. My senses were sharpened, tuned to every shift in air and vibration in the earth. Somewhere to my left, a beast roared—one of Pixie-Bob's maybe, or something worse.
Then I saw him—Izuku, standing in front of a crouched Kota, shielding him from a shadowy figure with a clawed hand.
"Izuku!" I shouted.
He turned toward me, panting. "He's fast. I couldn't get Kota to move—!"
"Move now," I said, slamming a foot into the dirt. A massive column of earth shot up between them and the villain, sending debris flying. The man hissed and jumped back into the shadows.
"Thanks," Izuku said, placing a shaking hand on Kota's shoulder. "We need to get him to Mandalay—"
"Go!" I interrupted. "I've got this."
He hesitated.
"I'll be fine," I said, softer now. "I always am, remember?"
For a second, he just stared at me. His green eyes searched mine, like he wanted to say something. Something big. But then he just nodded and scooped Kota into his arms.
"I'll be back."
"Try not to get punched in the balls this time."
He groaned. "Not funny!"
I grinned anyway, watching as the two ran off to safety.
A tree exploded beside me.
I whirled to find Dabi standing at the edge of the clearing, smoke curling from his fingertips.
He stepped into the clearing, smoke curling off his arms, blue flames licking the edges of his coat like a devil's whisper. His patchwork skin pulled tight over jagged scars, and his icy blue eyes locked on mine with hungry interest.
"Oh," he said, voice a gravelly drawl. "They didn't tell me you were here."
I stared him down, already reaching for the power coiled deep in my chest. "You made a bold choice, coming here tonight. Wanna yield now?"
"I'd rather not." He lifted his hand, and fire crackled to life—hotter than normal flame, unnatural in color. "You've got something I want."
"Too bad," I said. "I've got a habit of breaking things people want."
