The city is only a few minutes away from campgrounds and with Kris directing where to turn and how far to go, we make it into the area where the party is taking place in what feels like only moments. We roll the windows down and Pat leans out one of them, whooping loudly and Trish yells at her to stop fooling around and get back in the car. I laugh at them and stick my hand out the window, feeling the rushing air hit my skin and my bangs are blown out of my face, making me feel fresh and excited about the night. The only thing I find wrong so far about sneaking out is simply that Cameron went a little overboard on how much mascara she put on me and my eyelashes keep hitting the lenses of my glasses. Other than that, I'm not complaining one bit.
I watch as the buildings and bright street lights pass us, lighting up the night and people walk up and down the sidewalks, doing a little late night shopping. Cameron points out all the different stores she wants to visit with Aunt Libbie when we get back to her house in a couple of weeks and the others including Mitch just want to know if they'll be food at the party and if we can escape the place early and stop by some fast food place for burgers. Turner plays with the radio trying to find a different station, ignoring everyone's demands to turn it back because they were listening to that, and I keep my eyes focused on the city outside the window.
Even with everyone's talking and laughing filling up the car and the music adding a playlist to it all, a few thoughts creep back into my mind that I tried so hard to forget about for just one night. I glance at the front seat and watch Jace drive the car, his eyes locked on the road and not being able to read any certain emotion from him. He hasn't said a word to me all night and I think maybe he's still a little upset with me. I want to talk to him but with everything being so crazy tonight, I'm not sure if the right moment will come at all until tomorrow when things have hopefully died down. Maybe I can make a perfect moment or just decide to ignore the timing all together and talk to him when I see the slightest opening. I glance back out the window and bury all thoughts as deep down as I can, trying to let my head be free from any more thinking for just this one night.
"Turn here," Kris announces next to me to be heard over the music. Jace turns the car around the next corner and we drive for a minute before Kris tells us to pull up to a building that looks more ramshackled and worn than a party central. As soon as we pull up the building, we stare at the building for a minute, questioning looks on all of us at the ten story building that looks to me like it could be haunted or worse.
"Um," Trish starts, "I thought we were going to a party, not the home of Cropsey."
"I swear there's someone standing in front of that window," Mitch says pointing towards what he says somewhere on the fourth floor.
"That's because there is," Amber replies.
"And I'm done," Mitch says throwing his hands up in the air.
"Quit being such a crybaby," Pat says already getting out of the car.
"I'm so not going in there," Mitch says still staring at the window. "I do not want to get murdered tonight."
