A couple of days later I'm given the task of picking up some last minute camp supplies that we might need like bug spray and the like while my parents take care of some last minute work stuff today and Cameron is working out at the gym. Mom wrote up a small list for me and dad gave me some cash before I headed off to the department store down the street. I pulled into the parking lot at around 11 in the morning a few minutes before it opened and already there are a few people waiting in the parking lot. Apparently I'm not the only one in need of bread and batteries this early in the day.
I walk into the store, list in hand and grab a red carrier by the doors before heading off to find what I need. I pass through the aisles, picking up certain items and crossing them off the list as I go, not wasting time with looking around at anything I don't need. I pass by the dessert and sweets aisle and still get a bit nervous when I do. I don't freak out as much as I used to, thanks to Jace helping me out with that but I still feel that little itch whenever I see those processed sweets on the shelf selling for a two for one price. The itch that still makes me want to get away from them but not as badly anymore. It's a weird change and still something I'm not used to.
I clear my head and weave my way through the store to the very back where all the camping supplies and such is stored to find what I need that mom wrote down for me. It's a bit of a treck to get there and by the time I do, I'm almost out of breath and my legs are hurting a little from walking all the way back here. I get that the camping supplies isn't all that popular and undeserving of a shelf in the front of the store but seriously? Is there really a need to put it in the very depths of the store? I tell myself to stop complaining and just get the things I need. I pull out the list from my pocket and start searching for bug spray, pepper spray, sun block and anything else mom thought would be useful. I'm surprised she didn't write down 'swiss army knives' but I guess we're not allowed to have those in camp otherwise it'd be in bold letters.
I decide to grab a couple of bandanas for us since they're nice to have if you're going hiking which Cameron might drag me along on for her idea of a fun activity. I'm sure with all the hills in California, there's bound to be a hiking trail at Camp Brenwood. I grab a pink one for her and a light blue one for me but I have a bit of difficulty deciding on the sun block. There are about six different kinds, some cheaper, some with a higher SPF and others that smell better and I have no idea which one to even get. It's like the toothpaste aisle with fifty different kinds and you know which one you use but you start debating if there's a better one to get and before you know it an hour has gone by and you're left with a headache and still unsure about the toothpaste you decided on. I must spend about ten minutes just staring at the stuff and my feet start aching from standing there so long trying to figure out what to get. I'm about to just give up and grab one of each when a voice speaks up beside me.
"Are you lost?" he asks. I glance at the guy next to me and back at the sunblock.
"You could say that," I admit.
"Maybe I can help," he says. "What are you looking for?"
"Sunblock. But apparently there's a lot more involved in choosing which brand to get than just seeing which one looks and smells prettier." I say. I get a laugh out of him and it makes me feel a little less stressed. At least, someone thinks I'm funny.
