Over the next couple of days, I'm recruited to help volunteer in the kitchen with washing the dishes after breakfast. I'm having some fun with it since it's really only me in the back while everyone else who works in the kitchen is busy cleaning the countertops and taking out the trash and things. I like working for the hour than I'm there since it gives me something to do and it's not a huge stress. I almost dropped a couple of plates on my first day but I'm a fast learner and I learn from my mistakes. Cameron kept teasing me about volunteering to help out but I just ignored her since I'm the one doing it, not her. I could tell she was secretly thinking about volunteering for something herself since it'd look good on a application for a job in the future. It's actually quite rewarding too. That whole helping someone out and feeling accomplished thing. A little cheesy but it applies.
I'm put a cup on the drying rack and squeeze some of the soap onto the sponge again to get it sudzy and turn the hot water up a bit. I don't hear it at first but as I'm washing the plate I hear someone behind me hissing loudly to be heard over the running water. I glance over my shoulder and jump when I see Amber peeking her head through the door to the kitchen and I almost lose my grip on the plate before catching it in time.
"Amber," I snap at her. "What are you doing? You almost scared me to death."
"So sorry," she says. "But I need you to help me with something. Like, now." She glances over her shoulder and slips into the kitchen, closing the door almost all the way but leaving a crack open for her to peek through into the cafeteria.
"Get Trish or Cameron to help you," I reply. "I'm kind of busy."
"I can't find them or Pat," she shakes her head. "And I think Kris is getting a speech about stealing Peyton's phone."
"Of course," I mumble to myself. I place the plate safely onto the rack and turn the water off to clean up around the faucet and the counter where some water splashed onto it. "I can't help you, Amber."
"Please," she begs. "It'll only take five minutes. You can slip back in through the back door and no one will even know you were gone."
"I can't just leave when I have to dry the dishes." I shake my head.
"Please, Audry," she says again. "I really need your help." I look at her and see that her face is troubled like this is really a big deal and in my heart I feel myself giving in. My brain on the other hand is sending so many warning signals of what could possibly happen should I get in trouble for leaving early without telling anyone or that whatever Amber needs help with can't possibly involve something good. It's not like she and the others can exactly stay out of trouble for long or even at all. Sometimes I wonder if it's physically impossible for them to behave. I sigh, already regretting my choice and place the sponge in the sink before drying my hands on a towel hanging from a ring next to the sink.
"What do you need my help with?" Sometimes I also wonder if it's physically impossible for me to say no when someone needs my help. I would love to be a jerk for once.
