A few days pass by with family dinners and quality time together around the living room or table playing games and recalling funny stories with lots of laughter and smiles, taking trips to sightsee around the city, all of which mom and dad want to squeeze into the last few days before me and Cameron have to head off to camp for an entire month. Aunt Libbie and Uncle Scott take us to the beach a couple of times as well as their favorite restaurants, parks, stores and the like. They also spoil us with souvenirs to take home with us that make me wonder if I'll need an entirely new suitcase for.
I never realized how much we all missed Aunt Libbie and Uncle Scott until the first night we were here when we couldn't fall asleep because we couldn't get all the funny jokes they told us out of our heads, me and Cam staying up in her room and whispering to each other about our favorite ones and giggling uncontrollably into our pillows. I've never ever met two people who were more alive than anyone and who could tell a joke a thousand times over and still word it the right way so that it makes you bust out laughing every single time you hear it. Mom says they have refreshing souls whereas dad thinks they're both lunatics. Me and Cameron, however, can't get enough of them.
So, when I come downstairs in the morning, the smell of crispy bacon and buttery toast filling the air around the house, I can't help but smile bigger with each step I take.
"Hey, Sleeping Beauty!" Uncle Scott says happily, scrambling some eggs in a bright red pan with white polka dots all over.
"My dad calls me that," I reply. I give Aunt Libbie a peck on the cheek before taking a seat at the table to wait for the food to be ready.
"Well, then, we were both raised to never tell a lie," he smiles.
"You want something from me, don't you?" I squint my eyes at him.
Uncle Scott laughs a nervous laugh. "What? Me? No way! Can't I just tell my niece that she's as beautiful as the day is long?" he slides a plate in front of me and pats me on the head. Just because I'm short doesn't mean it's okay to pat my head but I give him a pass since he did give me food.
"Oh, just spill it already." Aunt Libbie responds. "Go ahead and dump it on her, Prince Charming."
"Okay, okay, fine. Will you help me wash the cars today?" Uncle Scott asks. "They're looking a little sorry with all the dead bugs and dirt and bird poop."
I sigh. "Because I love you, fine."
"That's why she's my favorite." He snaps his fingers and points at me like I proved his statement.
"Hey! What about me?" Cameron exclaims when she rounds the corner into the dining room.
"Be still my heart!" Uncle Scott puts a hand over his heart and blinks rapidly. "That smile is just too bright for this dim morning." I roll my eyes and glance out the window. There's not one cloud in the sky.
"Alright, Romeo." Aunt Libbie says rolling her eyes. "Finish buttering the toast and get these girls a workin'.
"My pleasure," Cameron sits down and digs into the delicious breakfast in front of her. My uncle might not be a chef, but man does he know how to make an egg. They always come out soft and fluffy and melt-in-your-mouth right off the pan. Me and Cameron groan as we take a bite of the miracle of breakfast foods. Uncle Scott's main dish of choice is eggs and I swear he can make it in almost every single form possible; scrambled, poached, fried, cooked. You name the form and he'll make it so.
