The familiar mint-green house came into view. Mr. Mitchell, the twins' father, was watering the flowers."Afternoon, Ed!" He smiled blissfully.
"Hi," Edward quickly greeted, barging through the front door of the house. Jen and Erik weren't in the living room. Or the kitchen. Or in the backyard. So that meant...
"A-ha!"
"What the fuck?!"
"Edward!"
The two friends of his sat side-by-side near Erik's desk. They both seemed to be innocently looking at a magazine. Their expressions were wide-eyed and stern, not at all guilty.
"Um..." Edward began to say, no words coming to him. Erik got up from his seat.
"What the hell are you doing here, Edward?!" He was seething with rage. "Can't trust your girl to be alone with me for five fucking minutes?"
"What! No," Edward found his voice. "It's I who should be mad at you! Why'd you take her in here, of all places?!"
"We were just looking at Mad Magazine!" Jen yelled, getting up from her swivel chair to join the argument.
"Like hell you were! Is this your version of foreplay, Erik? Huh? Trying to seduce my girl while I'm off with Kim, who I'm not even dating?"
Both Erik and Jen looked too frustrated with words. They exchanged annoyed looks, and Jen sighed heavily.
"Edward- listen to what you just said.
You're mad at us because you thought we were doing something we shouldn't. But there's nothing between us, I promise. You're just being..." Jen started to realize what she was saying. "You're just being jealous."The couple gazed at each other's eyes. His chocolate-brown ones against hers of sky-blue. They understood at once.
"I'm sorry," they almost blurted in unison. They shared a small kiss and beamed. Jen and Edward embraced each other in a hug.
"I should have believed you. Sorry for being so jealous," Jen spoke quietly.
Edward responded, "Ditto." He looked over to his friend, who seemed deeply uncomfortable. Edward broke the hug and gave her one more kiss.
"Come on, let's go back to my place," Edward suggested. He took Jen's hand, unashamedly leaving Erik in his bedroom doorway.
"We'll see you later, Rick!" She sniggered, exiting the house and strolling down the sidewalk, with her boyfriend's warm hand held in hers.
After a few silent moments of walking, she whispered, "Hey, Ed?"
"Hm?" He had been zoning out.
"I was thinking... I don't know. We both aren't that jealous anymore. I mean, how could you cheat on me with a girl that has scissorhands?" Jen chuckled, and Edward silently agreed. "But that's the thing; Kim is potentially dangerous. I can see what she's done to your cheek and I don't want anything worse to happen." Edward felt his cheek, a little surprised. He was unaware that a scar had formed from it. "So please... You can go just one more time, but after that, stay away from the mansion. I just don't want you to get hurt."
Edward let go of his grip and began to open his mouth in protest, but then he saw Jen's face. She really wasn't afraid of him dating another woman, just of his safety. And he loved Jen, with a guilty realization, more than he'd ever loved Kim. He felt nervous that he actually needed to remind himself that. However, Jen was correct. It wasn't good to dwell on someone who had been perfectly fine without him for years.
"Okay," Edward finally stated. He re-wrapped his hand around Jen's. Edward would make his last visit count.
