*** The week that Follows ***
The girl didn’t appear again after the attack, which despite all efforts to keep the attack under wraps, it was well known all over the world. Though the idea that the throne was haunted and a few people claimed to see a ghost was only popular in worldly conspiracy circuits, literally everyone caught wind of the supposed ghost’s very real assault killing thirty-eight very real men and permanently mutilating the Secretary’s face.
Things changed very fast after the public attack. Before the Ghost the throne had secure control over the entire planet and all of its remaining people, the six billion who mainly congregated in the America’s, Europe, and what’s left of the past country of China. After the end of the Fourth World War the remaining people flocked to large cities for fear of looters and monsters in the wild. Suddenly the world worked very differently and cities massing hundreds of millions seemed to appear overnight—Mega Cities was a term coined within the first couple months of this phenomenon.
With such large masses of terrified people crowding into unprepared cities some other sort of phenomenon happened coined Rapid Expansionism. Where before it would takes months or years to construct a building, massive skyscrapers were being built in weeks using double or triple the normal manpower to construct such a building with no downtimes. Walls taller than the Great Wall of China appeared seemingly overnight full of all the next-generation technology to defend against any kind of enemy. Everyone who could work worked—it wasn’t work for profit or personal gain, but work for a collective push to protect humanity from extinction.
Even with how stubborn and unreliable humans have been in the past when three and a half billion were slaughtered from every wake and corner of the world by an inhuman force things get put into perspective. The world order took complete advantage of this fear of the unknown, creating Mega Cities overnight. Non-stop work shifts, thousands of workers and their payment at the moment was food and a place to stay. To be in a Mega City one had to make sacrifices to help protect the masses from the outside.
Now, eight months after the war fifteen Mega Cities across the globe make up for nearly five billion people. Four in North America, two in South America, one in Europe, one in Africa, and the remaining seven in Asia, mostly on the East Coast where the devastation didn’t hit as hard, the center of Asia being nearly completely annihilated during the war.
The other billion people of the world were spread out, some in areas that didn’t get as much pressure from World War Four and others the few who decided to hold out in their smaller towns or cities. This left large areas of the globe desolate. So even if the Director controlled all the Mega Cities, Redeme (a newer country consisting of mostly old European countries created in retaliation to the start of World War Four), Falu (a country which replaced The United States of America after revolutionaries used The Fourth World War to take control, which consisted of the old US, Canada, and most of Central America), Australia and Brazil the rest of the world was a lawless land filled with massive abandoned cities.
People say in heavily hit areas such as India, parts of Russia, and Northern Africa skeletons of those lost in the war are still scattered amongst the land, more people dying than those left to pick up and bury the remains. These areas were completely abandoned, and not because every single person in the area decided to move to the Mega Cities, but because every single person for hundreds and thousands of miles were slaughtered by the monsters that roamed these lands for months. Within the hard-hit areas no one lived—they all died or managed to get out when the war was at its worst.
Now, eight months later, only bandits and criminals dared moved back into the Dead Lands, and even then normally only for a short while, the millions of bodies and rotten smell quickly driving those who dare enter the lands crazy. They say ghosts haunt the Dead Lands and anyone who dared to enter them went insane and died in a fortnight. Each of the Dead Lands were renamed by the people, the African one known as The Roast, the one in Russia The Frozen Desert, and in Asia, The Kingdom of a Billion Ghosts, often shortened to the KBG. To enter them was certain death—some airline companies even refused to fly over them. For now the Dead Lands were just massive abandoned areas no one dared occupy.
