Never had been such an innocent sound been so terrifying in Katniss' life.

Not the games' cannon nor the trumpet-like sound signaling the start of the killing, no, those were expected sounds.

Not.

There was a deep tremble-like sound, rock grinding rock, a deep guttural monster awakening from its long slumber.

First, it was one large, gigantic concrete wall that rose and kept rising between two of the skyscrapers, soon a second, a third, until the realization crept in.

"We've got to move!" Katniss yelled like a bird in a cage, a cage that would soon fill with liquid hate as the owner of it would drop it in in the hopes of drowning the bird inside.

And then there was a glugging nose as the middle of the yard that now enclosed them fell, almost splashing into a dark, viscous liquid quickly bubbling up... Of course, that was before pipes strategically burst, spewing more of this liquid.

One of the soldiers who had foolishly run up to the concrete wall had only had the time to look up at the liquid darkening the sky.

Panick gripped the group as they just witnessed a man's dying screams of agony as he was boiled alive as he was swept under.

"RUN!!" Came the scream, but where? Where run? How to outrun this?

Their salvation was Gale slamming in a window with his gun, the shards of glass falling being as inviting as snow currently.

But come on-- Katniss ran towards it, flanked by Peeta, who soon gained on her-- It can't be that easy, can it?

A side tackle made her completely lie down on the concrete, her still hurting ribs from D2 yelling at her as a weight fell on her.

Swinging back, the elbow catches a face.

"MURDERER!! YOU ARE TRYING TO GET US KILLED!!" Percy's displaced instincts stared back at her as she covered her head with an arm to avoid the fist ramming down. "YOU FUCKING KNEW THAT SHIT WAS THERE!! I SAW YOU WALK TO IT!!"

Before another punch could come, one of the last remaining soldiers she didn't know personally came up, grabbing the other woman in a choke hold and yanking back, and Finnick yanked the other way, almost throwing Katniss up on her feet.

The horror of it all was ever mounting.

Turning to see Percy bite so hard through clothing that blood splattered from the man's arm up on her face, holding tightly as she yanked his other arm off to duck away and drive a side kick up into his throat.

And if falling into the liquid wasn't enough.

The body was yanked out from it by a web made of barbed wire tightly winding its way around his body and limbs, stringing him up like fairylights.

Before Percy could lunch at her again despite Finnick in the way with his trident, let's not forget Peeta.

The boy caught her swinging arm in the crook of his elbow and, with her momentum, easily got in her back, grabbing her other elbow that was pulled back and digging his fingers in like his life depended on it, the other arm snapping up and arm around her neck as his fisted his own clothing so she could wiggle free.

His strength was always underestimated, and Percy is not thinking straight enough.

"YOU'RE TRYING TO KILL US ALL!!" Bellowing from the top of her lungs as Peeta muttered soft nothings that couldn't be heard while forcefully dragging Percy along.

"Let's move!" Finnick quickly pushed Katniss ahead, finally getting a reaction out of her.

Passing the window and just thoughtlessly running up the steps to the landing, everyone was crowning.

Drowning out Percy's screams was easy when the thing drowning them out was the sight of the boiling black liquid slowly rising, and rising, and rising.

It bubbled over the landing... But it stopped there, covering just the first step of it.

Screams of taught anger soon gave way to overwhelmed sobbing and muttering, but otherwise it was silence that now reigned master.

And that's how all realized that Snow was not ready to give up without a fight.

Oh yes, death could wait.

And today it came to collect.

And it would not leave before it reapes the last of the damned on this dark, dark, day.

For death waits as the games have just begun.

For today the dying have willingly come to meet it.
