Well... Who'd have expected Peeta, once a bread boy, to know a secret exit sneaking around guard lines all the way to the surface?
Had he followed someone all the way here? Did someone tell him? Or had he stumbled on it himself?
Percy couldn't really find herself caring much about it for one simple reason... M-many... Many simple reasons.
The sway of the leaves, the rustle of the leaves, the groaning of woods, the dance of birds, the croaking of toads, the bubbling of a source, the splashing of water, the blue of the sky, the warmth of the sun, the sent of flowers, the caress of the breeze.
And many.
Many more little things.
A deep breath from the crispness of the air seemed to do the opposite, so fresh it melted tension away and so cool it warmed a frozen body.
I mean, who knows that not being cooped up in a bleak and narrow place underground could do you good, right? Certainly not 13.
Sitting on top of a little hump in the bumpy forest of 13, close to the part that had been bombed, over looking it even, but still hidden between the trees and away from wandering eyes. (I... Didn't write a bombing chapter, did I ._.)
Forearms resting limp on her bent knees and looking ahead.
"Can you tell me, how's everyone doing?" Voice embraced by the wind picking up, it would soon rain, but nothing seemed to disturb this moment between them.
"Everyone?"
"Everyone... She... Left out things when I asked..."
"Finnick and Annie have each other and Mags, nightmares, live next to them and often awoken to screams, Beetee's paralyzed below the belt but still complains of complex pain to his legs, Johanna might be getting hooked on the pain meds even if she won't admit it, Katniss has panic attacks and Haymitch is working himself to the bones... Outside of victors... Effie is getting back on her feet after the treatment 13 gave her. Gale and Katniss had a falling out. I permanently lost an eye. Prim is scared of the thought of ever leaving 13."
"So she lied to me." She shuffled her feet until her ankles touched, and hugged her knees afterward.
"Or that's how she sees things... From her eyes, I'd say the world is just doom and gloom, and as long as someone lives and breathes, that's living."
Looking back at Peeta, who leaned on a tree with his arms crossed... He was not a thin guy even before now, always having some muscle and strength in him, but it seemed he put some more on and maybe even gained a bit of height... Or had he always been taller than her? She can't remember... The camo pants and that almost slut tight tactical black T-shirt didn't fit his vibe that's for sure, nor did the shorter more military haircut.
But despite that... He's face, even if etched with his own pain, was ever gentle.
"You've... Always been good at reading people..."
"True, that's why you let me in, because you couldn't fool me."
"So that was true..."
"You know Percy." Pushing off the tree to crouch near her, but having bad balance, he ended up putting a knee on the ground. "You can ask us if you are having trouble weeding out the fake from the real."
"And yet the answers I want no one would give them to me straightforwardly."
"Maybe you were asking the wrong people."
