Over the course of a few days of more travel, Connor made several concoctions using his alchemy. Each of them just waiting for the right moment in his bottomless bag.
A potion of Minor Agility that worked similarly to his Minor Strength potion. It enhanced his reaction speeds, balance, dexterity, and the control he exerted over his body, allowing him to move more similarly to Adelia's cat-like grace.
The second potion he'd made was the Potion of Stoneflesh. Its ingredients were by far the easiest to gather as it required only stone and a small amount of his own blood.
When taken, it toughened his entire body. From his skin and hair to his internal organs. Leaching them of color almost imperceptibly but making him considerably tougher.
In many ways, it would imbue him with something similar to the natural toughness of dwarves.
It was a harder potion to make than his minor strength potion, but his growing alchemy power had been more than up to the challenge.
And, with all the forests and dense vegetation they'd traveled through, he'd had easy access to a collection of plants that could be mixed into a deadly poison.
A deadly poison that was only further enhanced when it was refined through alchemy and transformed into something vastly more potent.
Connor had made an oil out of the stuff and out of everything he'd made with his alchemy so far, it was perhaps the deadliest. He could coat a blade or bolt head in the stuff and even just a scratch could prove fatal. Depending on the target.
He doubted it'd do much of anything through the magical protections someone like Erik had, but it was the first thing he'd made that was of any use to Adelia.
She'd tested it thoroughly on a pack of bandits they'd encountered. The first humans they'd seen in what felt like forever, and they hadn't been much different from the monsters they'd found so far.
Although the bandits had screamed louder...
But that might've just been the poison and the way Adelia kept them alive longer to conduct a thorough test of his poison. It'd disturbed him a little just how much she'd seemed to enjoy doing so...
After seeing the bandits' movements growing clumsy, and watching them collapse to the ground, convulsing in agony as they foamed at the mouth, Connor made sure to quadruple the supply of the antidote he kept on him.
Just in case.
Though, while reading through his codex, he was surprised to learn that alchemists were naturally incredibly resistant to toxins. And the codex said the resistance would grow with his alchemy power.
He wondered if that was why Adelia's cooking hadn't killed him the first time he'd had some.
And given that she was a half-demon and afforded gods only knew what level of supernatural toughness, he doubted the poison posed much of a threat to her either.
Still, it was a potent toxin and it seemed best to be cautious.
Finally, not long after dawn, and just when they were looking for another place to make camp, they saw the first promising settlement of humanoids further upstream along the river they'd been following.
It was a small city with high stone walls that looked like a strange blend of human and stouter, thicker dwarven construction. Fishing boats drifted lazily along the surface of the massive lake that bordered one side of the city.
The sparkling water flowed steadily into the river they'd been following. The lake and rivers created gaps in the otherwise decent fortifications but large towers seemed well positioned to help reinforce those less defended areas to at least some degree.
