In the small city of Baloch, in the room he and Adelia shared, Connor sat in the center of a new type of alchemy circle.

The circle was covered in runes, with three smaller circles woven into the complicated diagram. All painstakingly drawn out by Connor while Adelia watched him intently.

She said nothing and was clearly trying not to distract him, but he felt her eyes on him as he worked.

Connor sat in the largest of the three circles within the alchemy circle. A gold coin rested in one of the circles in front of him. The other circle contained a pile of small lead bars Connor had purchased earlier, melted down from scrap.

Connor looked over his father's notes in his codex, double-checking his work and his understanding of the process. Everything seemed correct. It was time to begin.

Connor took a deep, steadying breath and allowed his alchemy power to flow through him, connecting to the circle around him.

A red glow spread through the chalk until the entire alchemy circle crackled with power.

Connor raised his hands, each pointing toward the different metals as red lightning crackled and spat and the essences of the gold coin and the lead filled his mind's eye.

With the circle helping to guide his energy, he began transmuting the lead into gold almost without even thinking about it.

He'd expected the process to be exceedingly difficult, which was why he'd picked the easiest possible transmutation to start with.

But, it was far smoother than he could've anticipated as his alchemy power rapidly shifted the lead's essence. Almost massaging it closer and closer to gold. The effort required was nothing compared to breaking down the bolt of enchanted dark iron in his cell on the ship.

It took only moments for small gold spots to appear on the lead, looking like mold taking hold of bread before rapidly expanding outward, spreading over and through the lead, until all of the lead had an essence that matched the gold coin.

Connor checked it over, just to be sure, but it was complete. He withdrew his alchemy power and the red glow around him died. As it did so, he felt as though it ought to have been harder to attain so much wealth.

But, his notes had pointed out that alchemy didn't care about the monetary value of items.

Rather, the difficulty of transmuting had more to do with the materials involved, and given how similar lead and gold were, changing one into the other had been exceptionally easy.

Connor picked up one of the bars of newly transmuted gold and turned it over in his hands. The entire process had taken only a few minutes and hardly drained him at all.

And he hadn't been rushing in the slightest.

"That's amazing to watch," Adelia said.

Connor chuckled. "I'm glad you think so. It was easier than I thought it'd be. Looks like we'll have even more wealth to work with than I thought," he said.

"Really? I knew I chose well when I married you," Adelia purred.

"Ah, now your reasons become clear," Connor said, "and here I thought it was my good looks and charming personality."

Adelia stretched languidly. "That too I suppose," she said.

He swore he could hear the smirk in her voice.

"So, what'll you do with your newfound wealth?" Adelia asked.

"Our wealth," Connor said as he tossed her the gold bar in his hands. She caught it easily.
