-Reading in the shadows-

“So are there any other things outside there I should know about?” I asked Gerard sudden wonder prickling my mind. We were having a conversation about my safety and the fact I was now under Fray’s vivid eye although I hadn’t seen him yet.

“As in?” he asked a small smile curling on his impeccable face.

“As in I know there are vampires and I’d like to know if there are three headed dogs running wild out there too” I answered.

“Well no three headed dogs last time I checked, but there are sorcerers or enchanters as some people call them”

“What you mean like witches and wizards? Like Harry Potter witches and wizards?”

“Yes you could put it like that I guess, but without the wands and ridiculous robes, there are also the Edwards, they are a family of vampires who can practice magic there are only seven of them, as the rest have died of old age”

“So are they the badass vampires that run the town?”

“No they aren’t actually. But they do have high authority due to their abilities, but not violent. In fact generations ago they were ruthless killers, but that generation died and when Luscious Edwards destroyed his great grandfather they became very at peace with the world and they taught it to their children too”

“So these generations...how long ago were they?”

Gerard gave me an odd look; he didn’t really know what I was talking about. “I mean well...do you guys age? You’re not like a hundred or something are you?”

He started laughing in outbursts of hysterical laughter. When he eventually calmed down he gathered an answer. “Yes we do, we aren’t what you read in twilight books or anything like that, I am eighteen and I have lived eighteen years, but the elders of the town are hundreds of years old, it is said that when a vampire wants to stop ageing they can get an enchantment from a sorcerer to stay at that age, and then if they wish to begin ageing again they just have to get the counter curse”

“I have to read up on this” I muttered more to myself, but I knew he would be able to hear me anyway.

“Maybe you should, there is a section in the town library about vampires and sorcerers, but make sure you take them out and read them at home it isn’t too good for a human to be seen reading them in the corner of the library by a vampire”

“Won’t the librarian suspect something?”

“No she’s human, one of the peaceful ones, someone who has grown up in town and just walks around like nothing strange is going on”

“So what about the humans that chose not to get along with the vampires?”

“Well usually they just rant on about it, not taking action or revolution or anything”

“Usually? What happened to the ones that chose to take action?”

Unease fell on his face and he looked like he was having an internal battle. I seemed to always have been able to read people like that, just by looking at the expression in their eyes, because I knew for a fact it was almost impossible to be able to change what feeling you had in your eyes. At the end he seemed to have reached a decision.
