The window shatters as the house blows up. Me and Ellie are thrown off course and I turn so she won't get hurt. The fall seems so slow but I'm sure it was just a few seconds.
Maddie screams, she holds Jet by the neck as they watch me and Ellie free fall through the air. I see the bedding is to the left of us and I turn, throwing Ellie towards it.
She lands with a thud into the bedding but is unharmed, unlike me. I hit the road with such force that I pass out. My head streams blood and my ribs are broken.
Once I shake the dizzy feeling, I try to move my arms and legs. I silently thank the gods that I can move them.
"Bailey, we need to get out of here" Maddie cries.
The hunter from before stands next to our house, his lip curls into a sneer. I clip the dogs to me as Maddie takes the backpack. I growl, My wolf was right. He did come back and that will be his last decision. The dogs growl as I growl, the hunter pales and tries to run but I'm faster. I grab my knife from my holster and throw it, it hits him in the heart with such force that he slams into a tree.
"You can't control both of them" Maddie reminds me but there's no time to argue.
I grab her arm and start to run, she has no choice but to follow me. My wounds burn and the silver affects me but I push on, knowing that another hunter will not miss a second time.
We run for hours, the dogs are panting and I'm limping by the time Maddie makes us stop. The tell tail sign of sunrise is peaking over the horizon and I'm so tired that I fall asleep as soon as my head hits the ground.
We sleep for most of the day, light filters through the trees but luckily snow does not fall. Jet curls around me while Ellie curls around my sister.
I watch as Maddie sleeps, I hate to think that we are now on the run. I've only just found us a place to stay. Maybe it wasn't meant to be.
Animals give us a wide berth, Jet gets up and goes hunting for us. I got the dogs for protection but know they are like family and I realise that we aren't going anywhere without them.
