I run toward my Mother. She's silently crying. I put my arm around her and look up at Marlene. She wears a satisfied smile.
"Why? Why would you do this?" I ask Marlene.
She laughs, "Anything to break you." Her face goes slack, her body trembles and she collapses onto the ground. I scramble to Marlene's side, leaving my half-concious mother. I shake her and a moan escapes her lips.Uriah comes over and kisses her. Her eyes flutter open and Uriah pulls back. She looks confused.
"Where am I? What am I doing here?" She asks innocently.
I scoff, "Oh, you know, betraying your faction, killing my Mother. Nothing new, I'm sure." I snap at her. She looks hurt. My Mother moans a few feet away and I scramble to her.
"Mom, stay with me. Mom." I say, my eyes stinging.
She raises her hand feebly and pushes a stray hair from my face, "Beatrice, I love you. It'll all be okay. I'll be with Caleb and your Father. I really do love you. I wanted to tell you to trust Tanner. Just do it, for me. Take his offer, please. It's my dying wish. I love you. Good-bye, Beatrice." She fades out and her eyes close.
Tears streak my face, "Mom, please! Stay with me! Please!" I lean forward, my head on her stomach and cry. I cry until my eyes burn and my throat stings. I sit up and wipe my cheeks.
"Mom...I will. I'll do it for you. I swear. Be happy. I love you too." I say over her bloody body. I lean forward again and kiss her still-warm cheek. I stand up to see a full-on make out session between Uriah and Marlene.
"I'm just gonna go. I'll see you later?" I say. Uriah raises his hand and gestures for me to go. I turn and leave. The train ride home is uneventful. I don't cry. I keep seeing Marlene, her fist full of my mother's hair, banging her head of the wall.I jump off as the train passes the compound. I wince as my ankle twists. I limp down the stairs and to my room. I grab a change of clothes and shower. I rinse off my Mother's blood and Uriah's kisses. I change into my pajamas and get into bed. Eventually, sleep takes me.
I dream of my Mother. Eric forces her to hang over the edge of the Chasm by her toes. I run to her and my hands graze her ankles as she plummets to the jagged rocks below.
