I ran through the garden, leaving him behind, heart still beating loud, dress swishing the grass below.
Those eyes...
Those words...
"If I can't have you nobody will"
I can feel it. Christopher is not going to stop here.
He is dangerous.
And I need to stop associating with him at the earliest!
I rushed into my room and shut the door behind me, panting, trying to forget whatever happened in the garden.
And barely had time to breathe before my gaze landed on him.
Arron.
He was already there in the room, sitting by the window, swirling wine in a crystal glass.
He turned his head slowly, to look at me.
"Where were you?"
His voice was calm. Too calm.
I froze.
"...I went for a walk," I replied, trying to keep my tone neutral.
He didn't answer.
I crossed the room, slow and controlled, and sat on the edge of the bed. The silence pressed in, thick with things left unsaid.
"Was anyone looking for me?" I asked, trying to steady my voice.
"No."
"Then what's the problem?"
He hesitated, then spoke again.
"His Highness, wasn't at the banquet either."
My heart jumped.
The garden...
The Crown Prince...
Drunk.
His hand around my waist, hugging me tight to his chest.
If anyone had seen...
That would be a fucking disaster.
A married noblewoman in the arms of the Empire's heir. Drunk. At night. In the gardens.
"So?" I said, sharper now. "What exactly are you implying?"
Arron's gaze didn't waver. He lifted the glass to his lips and took a slow sip.
"I'm implying nothing," he said. "Just reminding you how fast rumors fly. And how huge scandals become, especially when it involves a noble woman."
A silence.
"But I'm sure the Duchess is already aware of that."
I clenched my jaw. "You should worry about your own scandals before mine. Have you forgotten about your past?"
That got his attention.
"Duchess, I have left everything from my past behind. You forbid me from getting involved with everything that I had once called my life... what more do you want from me?" He says, his face twisted a little, with an unspoken rage.
"Yeah, right. You may think that your image is reformed now but it's not. Everyone knows the man you used to be."
I crossed my arms.
"And I forbid you from returning to that world not just because I feared a scandal-but because I know what exactly you're capable of."
His lips curled, into a dark smile.
