Rosetta's POV
The storm had swallowed the entire manor.
Rain hammered against the windows of my room. The wind dragged across the walls like a restless animal.
I sat at my desk anyway, staring at the notebook I had opened with the golden fruit's poem in it.
Lady Mary had been arrested.
Would she really... kill her own mother? But she doesn't seem like that kind of a person...
The logical pieces pointed one way. The emotions pointed another.
Something felt wrong.
Outside, lightning cut the sky open again, followed by a rumble that made the furniture tremble.
Christopher had decided to delay the departure to the capital because of the storm. Mary remained in her guarded chamber for last night.
I let out a heavy sigh.
The rain quieted down a little and that was when the thought struck me.
If the murderer is caught then...
The curfew must be lifted...
Then maybe....I could finally go see that place the poem hinted at.
I hesitated only a moment before standing and then I rushed outside.
Christopher's chambers were on the other side of the manor, and I could hear voices even before I reached the door.
Guards stood outside, more than usual. Several officers gathered inside with Lassells's and Droit.
I froze in the doorway, instantly feeling out of place.
Lassells noticed me first.
"Your Highness seems to have a guest."
Feeling awkward, I said, "I... can come later. You're busy."
Christopher turned immediately at the sound of my voice.
"Rosie, come in. It's fine."
Reluctantly, I stepped inside. The officers turned stiffly, uncertain whether they should bow or remain in attention. I didn't know where to stand or what to do with my hands.
Christopher looked between me and them. "You've all done enough for now. We'll continue this briefing later."
They exchanged glances, but none argued. One by one they bowed and stepped out. Captain Wren, his personal knight hesitated at the threshold until Christopher said quietly, "You too. Leave us for a moment."
Wren looked surprised but obeyed. When the last of them had gone, the room felt too large and too silent.
Christopher's gaze softened.
"Rosie... what happened? I'm sorry I couldn't talk earlier. I was busy and-"
"It's fine," I said quickly. "Your duties come first."
He exhaled, tension easing from his shoulders. "What happened? You needed something?"
I took a breath.
"Since the arrest has been made, I suppose we can leave the manor now? I want to visit a place. There's something I need to confirm."
His brow tightened. "Where?"
I told him...briefly-what I had pieced together from the poem. What I believed the location meant.
He stared at me for a moment, stunned.
"Rosie... that place is dangerous. You had already faced danger once. Going there alone is out of the question."
