In Mal, Evie and I's room, Jane paced around the room. Jane said, "Mom said 'If a boy can't the see the beauty within, he is not worth it'. Can you believe it? What world does she live in?"
"Auradon" Mal and I said
Evie held up a dress she was sewing. "Maddie, do you like it?"
I smiled. "Yeah, I love it. It brings out your eyes."
Evie smiled, "we should leave you with Ben more often."
Jane sighed, "I'll never get a boyfriend."
I said, "Boys are overrated."
Mal said, "They're a waste of time."
Evie gasped, "I forgot to do Chad's homework! Oh, no! Oh, no, no, no, no, no!"
I said, "And that is exactly what we mean."
There was a knock on the door and a girl rushed in.
I groaned and sarcastically said, "Great, more people!"
"Hi, guys! I'm Lonnie!" The girl said. We stared at her. "My Mom's Mulan?" We just stared at her more. "No?"
I said, "Nope."
"Anyways, I love what you've done with Jane's hair." She squealed. "And I know you hate us, and, well, you're evil...But, do you think you could do mine?"
Mal said, "Why would I do that for you?"
Lonnie said, "I'll pay you fifty dollars."
Evie took the money from Lonnie's hand. "Good answer! I need to buy more material. Let's see, I'm thinking we lose the bangs, maybe some layers and some highlights!"
"Yeah, yeah," Lonnie said. "I want it cool, like the three of you."
"Really?" Evie said, "Split ends too?"
I glared at her. "Really, Evie? We're discussing this now?"
Mal looked up and Evie shook the bag of coins. Mal groaned and rolled off the bed, grabbing her spell book in the process. She opened it to the page. Mal read, "Beware, forswear, replace the old with cool hair."
Lonnie gasped, looking in the mirror. Evie sighed, "I know, I know. It looks like a mop on your head. You know, let's cut it off, layer it--"
"No, no, no, no!" Lonnie interrupted, "I love it!"
Evie said, "You do?"
"It's just..." Lonnie ripped the hem of her skirt. "There. Now I'm cool."
Jane followed her lead but then yelled, "What did I just do?! Mom's going to kill me!"
Lonnie left and Jane followed.
I growled and slammed the door, my back to the door. I blew hair out of my face and Evie handed me a pillow. I took it and screamed into it.
Jay and Carlos walked in. Jay yelled, "YO-HO-HO!"
Carlos whistled and yelled, "HEY!"
I looked up and glared at them. "What do you want?!"
"Ooh," Jay said, "Evie still bugging you about Ben?"
I dangerously growled at him and he backed off, his arms up in surrender.
Jay said, "Did the plan work? Did the plan work with Jane? Is she going over to see the wand?"
Mal said, "Do you think that I would be going through every spell in this book if I hadn't completely struck out?"
Jay said, "Is everybody in a bad mood?"
Mal yelled, "Our parents are counting on us! We can't let them down!"
"Oh, yeah," Evie said, "I found out that Fairy Godmother blesses Ben with the wand at the coronation and we all get to go. I have nothing to wear, of course."
Someone knocked on the door.
We all looked at the door and then stared at Evie.
The princess said, "What?"
I said, "Hold that thought."
I opened the door to reveal Ben.
I said, "Oh, hey, look at that! It's Ben."
"Hey!" Ben said, " I didn't see you guys after earlier today. I was just wondering if you had any questions or anything...that...you needed..."
I looked at the four of us in the background. "Not that I...know of..."
"All right." Ben said, "Okay, uh, if you need anything, just...uh..."
He started to walk away.
"Oh, wait!" I said. "Is it true that we all get to go to your coronation?"
"Yeah," he said, "The whole school goes."
I said, "Do you think it's a possibility that the five of us could stand in the front row next to Fairy Godmother, so we could soak up all that goodness?"
Ben sighed. "I wish you could go up front, but it's just me, my folks and my girlfriend."
Mal stood behind the door and leaned against the wall, smirking so the Ben couldn't see her.
I said, "And your girlfriend?"
"Yeah," Ben said, "I'm sorry."
"Okay," I said, "Thanks, bye!"
Ben said, "Oh, but there's plenty of--"
I slammed the door in their faces and said, "I think it's time that Benny boo got himself a new girlfriend."
Mal said, "Then I need a love spell."
Carlos tossed the spell book and I caught it. I said, "Let's find those ingredients."I played around with the ingredients and mentally checked off everything on the list. Mal stood next to me, reading the book. I said, "All we need is one tear and none of us ever cry."
Carlos said, "Let's chop us some onions."
"No," I said, "A tear of human sadness. We need to follow it correctly and exactly if we need it to work right. For all we know, if we don't follow them, we'll get Ben to puppy-love one of us."
Evie said, "Maddie to be exact."
Jay said, "A tear's a tear."
"Not true, Jay." Evie said. "They both have antibodies and enzymes, but an emotional tear is an ore protein-based hormones rather than a reflex tear."
Mal said, "Listen to you!"
Jay said, "Yeah, I totally knew that."
Carlos punched him in the arm. "Did not."
Jay said, "Did too!"
The door opened and Lonnie entered.
I hissed, "Sure, just come on in without knocking."
"Sorry," Lonnie mumbled. "There you are, Mal. I was looking for you. All the girls want you to do their hair!"
I snickered. Mal's not going to survive this.
Lonnie looked at the bowl behind me. "Midnight snack, huh? What are you guys making?
"Nothing special," I lied. "Just...cookies."
Behind Lonnie, Jay mouthed 'what?'.
I mouthed, 'just go with it'.
I tried to push it back farther behind me but she grabbed one and put it in her mouth before we could stop her. Jay, Carlos, Evie, Mal and I stared at her, frozen.
Lonnie said, "What? I'm not going to double dip!"
"Feel..anything?" Evie said, "Like it might be missing something?"
Lonnie looked around her eyes landed on Jay as he gave her a smile that was obviously being used to flirt. Jay said, "Hey there."
Lonnie's eyes widened and she gave him a tight smile. She said, "It could use some chips."
We all said, "Chips?"
"Chocolate chips." Lonnie said, taking a bowl of chocolate pieces out of the fridge. "The most important food group."
We stared at them.
Lonnie said, "Wait, didn't your parents ever, like, make you guys chocolate chip cookies?"
She put a couple into the bowl that I had put behind me. I gave her a look.
"Like," Lonnie said, "when you're feeling sad and they're fresh from the oven with a big old glass of and she just, makes you laugh and puts everything into perspective..."
I bit my lip and looked down.
Lonnie said, "Why are you all looking at me like that?"
Mal said, "It's different where we're from."
"Yeah, I know." Lonnie said, "I just, you know, thought that even villains love their kids..."
I glared, "Our-our parents love us..."
Oh, who was I kidding?
"Oh..." Lonnie quietly said. "How awful." A tear rolled down Lonnie's cheek. Before it could fall to the ground, I quickly caught it and flicked it into the bowl. I said, "Well, thanks for dropping by but we have to get this stuff into the oven. Have a really, really good night. Evil dreams!"
I shoved her out the door. Mal ordered, "Boys, cookie sheet! Evie, the oven! Maddie, read through the spell book and make sure we got everything right!"
We all said, "Yes, ma'am!"
I bit my lip and looked at the handwriting. There was a picture of Medusa on one of the pages. I whispered, "I'll see you soon."
