You stared at Ben across the station. He hadn’t seen you yet, but he was searching. Josh nudged you slowly and led you to the corner, much like Caspar had done just an hour or two before. He slowly leant towards you and began to speak. “______, if we get through the turnstile without him seeing, he can’t do anything, he won’t have enough time to pursue us before we get onto a train, even if it’s going in the opposite direction to wherever you have been…staying” he whispered. You stepped back. There were so many questions in your head and you felt like you were about to burst. You calmed down enough to reply. “Why are you helping me, Josh?” you said quietly, your voice shaking. He looked at you with a blank facial expression. It was as if you had just punched him in the gut. Josh said nothing, and all the while, you just stared at him waiting for a response.
Slowly, Josh got closer to you, snaking his arms around your waist. Before you knew what was happening, he pulled you up to his lips, and you were left balancing on your tiptoes with your faces fused together by your lips. For the past half an hour, Josh’s mannerisms had reminded you of Caspar an awful lot. The way he walked with you to the tube station in silence, the way he pulled you over to a corner, the way he held you, the way he softly kissed you. But you weren’t kissing Caspar, you were kissing Josh. The boy you swore down hated you. The boy that ignored you for years. All of a sudden, your preconceptions of Josh were gone. It all made sense now, the way he stayed quiet when you were around, the way he removed himself from the room whenever you and Ben kissed, the way he stared at you as you left the cupboard, the night you met Caspar, and the way he tried to light heartedly cover up your humility with humour after everyone had seen you kiss someone else.
“Anyway, erm, whose next? Come on Ben, let’s get you to bed. You’re ruining the mood mate” Josh joked.
You stepped away from him and clasped your hand over your mouth. You were wrong about Josh; everything you had thought of him was untrue. Your gut twisted into a million knots as you remembered shouting at him earlier on in your apartment.
Running over to the door, you locked up and looked at Josh, disgusted. “YOU VILE LITTLE PIECE OF SCUM” you shouted, walking towards him, throwing every insult you could think of.
You gulped and looked back at his questioning eyes. “Josh, I don’t know what’s happening with me right now, but I can’t do this here. Can we talk about this later, and focus on getting away from Ben at the moment?” you felt like you had thrown him under a bus as you watched him look down at the floor in disappointment. His head suddenly snapped up, and he had a focused look in his eye. “Right, we need to stay in a clump of people, and don’t look away from the turnstile” he instructed. Following Josh’s orders, you made it to the queue for a turnstile, while he was just a few people behind you.
All of a sudden, your name rang through the station. “______!!!!!!!” Ben shouted, his anger taking the better of him. You pulled your Oyster Card from your purse and literally ran through the turnstile. You turned back to look at Josh who was behind Ben, eyeing up his escape route. Josh ran out and pressed the card to the sensor pad and was immediately let through. Ben fumbled around in his backpack for his Oyster Card to follow you, but it wasn’t there anymore. Josh chuckled and pulled a second card from behind his back. “Looking for this, Ben?” he joked. You turned to him astonished, you had no clue what had just happened. “H-How did you…do…” you stuttered. Before you had time to continue, Josh grabbed your hand and pulled you to the escalator. A few minutes later, you were on the tube back to Caspar’s, all your belongings were in the small space around you, and Josh was explaining his history in pick pocketing. “Hey, I’ve lived in London my whole life, you can’t expect me to not pick up a skill in placing my hands carefully…” he winked. You elbowed him playfully, and the whole way home you laughed and joked about things you’d never have thought you’d have talked about with Josh.
It seems your first day in London had misled you. It was Liam and Josh all along. It was never Ben.
