You woke up slowly and stirred in bed for a while. It was a lovely morning and the sunlight was spilling in through the cheap blinds, illuminating the room. You turned in your bed to face Em, but she wasn’t there. You sat up and rubbed your eyes in confusion but you shrugged it off once you saw her bag open and her clothes gone. You immediately got dressed and as you were heading downstairs for breakfast, you knocked on Caspar’s door. There was no answer, so you walked in. again, his clothes were gone. You came to the conclusion that they were downstairs having breakfast without you. They probably didn’t want to wake you.

You eventually made your way downstairs and just before you entered the dining room, you heard something. “Caspar, are you sure?” Em whispered, only just audible. You poked your head around the door, determined to be unseen. Caspar sat there, not a word being said. He just nodded glumly. Em took a moment to exhale. “Caspar, you do know that ______’s going to be absolutely heartbroken!” she squealed. You didn’t have the faintest idea what was going on, but you didn’t really want to find out. Caspar finally spoke up. “I know, I know! But I honestly can’t think of any other way. She needs to know one way or another, and I know that with all that’s happened in the last few months, now isn’t an ideal time. But I can’t keep waiting to tell her, I’d better just get it out.” By this point, you had had enough.

You walked in, trying to seem oblivious to the conversation. “Tell me what?” you asked. Em and Caspar sat upright and stuttered a bit. Eventually Caspar pulled out a large flat box from his rucksack. You sat down with a puzzled look on his face. Caspar stood up and pulled a long silver chain from the box. He placed it around your neck and hooked it at the back. He sat back down and searched your face for a reaction. You looked down at the chain. It was plain apart from a blue glass bead. Upon closer inspection, you found your name etched into the glass. You gasped in awe at it. It was beautiful. You looked back at Caspar and immediately wrapped your arms around his neck. He placed his hand on the back of your head and pulled you into him.

You pulled away; Caspar looked upset, so you decided to leave it there. The three of you ate your breakfast in silence, and you noticed a few glances between Em and Caspar, but you tried to ignore it. Eventually, Em spoke up, breaking the silence finally. “We’re going to go to the Two Oceans Aquarium, it should be fun” she said, flicking through the leaflet. You all got up from the table, picking up your things, and left the B&B. When you arrived at the aquarium, the first thing that caught your eye was a little girl and boy playing in the corner. You smiled and Caspar ran over to them picking them up and wrapping them in a huge hug. You should have known immediately it was Hannah and Max, Caspar often talked about them, and Caspar’s step father was stood with them waiting for Caspar’s arrival.

“Are you okay with these two? They might be a bit tired from the journey here, I’ll be in the café so just bring them back when you three need to go.” Caspar’s step dad said. Caspar just nodded, Hannah and Max still clung to his body like monkeys. “How come they’re here anyway, not that I’m complaining!” he asked as he squeezed them into him playfully. They giggled and jumped down and ran around the aquarium looking at the fish. “I have no idea, you’ll have to ask your mother when you get back, she has the details, I was just told to accompany them here.” He shrugged in reply.

Caspar agreed coolly and soon, you were making your way around the aquarium with the two most enthusiastic and cutest kids in South Africa. Caspar and Em, on the other hand, were in the same mood as that morning. And you had no idea why.
