Josh had been quiet about his court case for weeks. His date was a month ago, but had been postponed, and despite asking why several times, he just shrugged at you and changed the subject. you woke up the day after Mr and Mrs Deyes wedding, to find Josh on the sofa in the living room. “Josh” you smiled, leaning over the couch and giving him a kiss on the cheek, before hopping over it and sitting next to him. “Morning” he smiled, giving you a sideways hug. “Hope you don’t mind, I only came in at half past three, the reception was wild” he remarked, chuckling and rubbing his unshaven cheeks as he did so.

“Why did you come here?” you asked, trying to sound as polite as possible. Josh smiled and leaned back, putting his feet up on the coffee table. “I didn’t want to wake Liam up” he answered yawning. He blinked a few times, before sitting up again, planting his feet firmly on the ground, a hint of panic taking over his face. “Holy shit” he muttered, as Caspar entered the room, rubbing the back of his neck. “Josh” he greeted, smiling as best he could while yawning. Josh nodded without turning around, as way of greeting. “Yeah, I’d better go home” he said, jumping to his feet and hugging you good bye as you got up too. “Josh?” you questioned, but he was already out of the door. “I’ll text you” he called from down the corridor, before Caspar shut the door and the remains of his voice were silenced.

“Odd” you mumbled, before heading to the kitchen to make a cup of tea. Caspar looked over at you as he sat on the sofa. “OOOOH YES PLEASE” he yelled, nodding at the mug cupboard after you shut it to get one out for yourself. You smiled and got another out for him, and returned shortly after with the tea. Your phone bleeped, and the screen lit up with Josh’s name. You opened the text and read:

Court tomorrow

Your eyes widened, and so did Caspar’s after he read the text over your shoulder. “I thought he had it a month ago?! What did he do now?” he exclaimed, picking up his mug to have a sip. You shook your head, “No, no, it was postponed, he never said why, but either way, he goes tomorrow” you answered calmly. You text Josh back:

I’ll go with you. Can you please tell me why it was postponed? How long have you

known its new date?

He replied:

Thank you. Later on. About two weeks.

You frowned at the phone, before putting it down, and leaned against Caspar. “That boy” you mumbled, your eyes fluttering shut, still tired from the night before. You opened your eyes again, forcing yourself to stay awake as it was about 11 o’clock in the morning. You checked the time on your phone. It was 13:34. “I think I need a coffee” you moaned, looking at your half empty mug of tea, and then heading to the kitchen. Caspar followed with his empty mug. “What you need is a day off. You do everything for other people and nothing for yourself” he smiled, placing a hand on the counter, either side of your hips, and kissed your shoulder. You chuckled, poured out your coffee and turned around to face him. “What do you suggest?” you asked him, brushing a hand through your hair. “We’ll go to the swimming pool later on and have a lazy swim” he smiled, leaning in for a kiss. You met his lips, and quite happily stayed like that for a while, before pulling away. “I’ll go and grab my bikini” you winked, pecking him again, before wandering off.

You had such a wonderful day of splashing around, relaxing, and after that, sitting by the pool and drying in the semi-warm air, that you almost forgot that the next day would decide Josh’s fate at last, the day you’d been dreading for over a month was finally here, and you didn’t want to see Josh crippled by the outcome.
