The Date.

The day went by smoothly after that. You watched some films, messed about in the garden, Em Skyped Dan, a lot, and you were generally having fun. You felt like you had finally got what you had come to South Africa to do, relax. The next day went by quickly, you had to pack and tidy, but the evening was perfect.

You came down stairs in a dress that was lying on your bed. It was your blue sundress. Caspar loved it on you, so you only presumed he had put it there. You looked around for your bags after your shower, but they were gone, so you had no choice but to put it on. As you neared the bottom of the stairs, you noticed that the lights were off, the only light coming from a few candles placed carefully around the room. Caspar stood looking at you admiringly across the room. He was dressed in a casual blue shirt with the top button undone, and a black blazer, along with some smart black trousers. He took your hand and led you to the table, which was now decorated with a white tablecloth and a candle in a wine bottle. Everything was lovely; there were even rose petals in the wine bottle, the candle illuminating them softly. Caspar sat you down at the table before seating himself.

“What’s all this for?” you giggled. Caspar filled your glass with a small amount of wine before smiling back at you. “We’ve never actually been on a date” he said innocently. You pushed the wine bottle candle to the edge of the table and leaned over to kiss him. He was perfect. When you thought he couldn’t be a better person, he went and did this. He didn’t deserve cancer, but for the night, you decided not to dwell on it.

Caspar served a lovely posh salad with honey and mustard dressing, but when it came to the main course, you had a feeling you knew what to expect. “I know you like steak, so I got us some” he laughed as he cooked it in the kitchen. “Wow, posh” you replied sarcastically, but he just stuck his tongue out at you. Soon enough he was finished cooking it, and you were joined at the table once again. “I’m not a chef,” he warned, “please don’t expect restaurant standards.” You giggled and ate a bit. It was actually really good, and you finished the whole plate.

Caspar then led you to the living room. You looked at him, confused. “Don’t I get dessert?” you chuckled. He out your favourite film on the TV with a touch of a button, he had obviously cued it up earlier on. You looked at the TV in happiness and surprise, but when you turned back to him, Caspar was gone. He came back two minutes later with two bowls of ice cream, and sat with you, his ice cream resting on his knee while his hand was around your waist. You leaned into him. The night was young, but it felt so late.  You were glad to be going home the next day, but on the other hand you didn’t want this moment to end, ever, because you had forgotten everything bad. There were only good thoughts.

The film ended and Caspar carried your sleeping body upstairs. You woke up slightly, but only to kiss him on the cheek, and then before you knew it, you were asleep again.

The next day you woke up a Caspar was in the room, packing the last of his toiletries away. You leaned on your elbows and smiled at him, and he grinned back. Em burst through the door, excitement spilled on her face like paint. She was looking forward to England, now she knew she could meet Dan. Things were about to get interesting…
