"Alright guys, get up!" Chip yelled, rousing me from my sleep. I yawned as I sat up, rubbing my eyes. Miles was next to me, blinking away tiredness."Today's the day." Chip said, looking at all of us. "We're going to rescue Aaron and look out for Taylor. The moment we get Aaron, we get the hell outta there. Got it?"
"Mhmm." Miles murmured, and I nodded. Avery was still passed out at my feet, her chest rising and falling.
"Guys, I want to have Avery stay here. She has food and weapons, plus would be safer then the lab." I explained.
Miles nodded, "Yeah, I agree with Jace. Avery would only get in the way, or get hurt."
Chip sighed, "Alright, then Avery will stay here."
"I'll write a letter." I said, picking up scraps of paper from the floor and a sharpie in the corner of the store. I began writing, fast and sloppy, but getting the point over. I read it over;
Dear Avery,
I'm sorry. I really am, but you're so much more safe here. We left for the lab and what ever you do: DON'T COME AFTER US! That's a command. I love you and I'm really sorry. If we don't get back in three days, get back to the warehouse. Survive. And if I don't make it back: I love you and goodbye.
Love your big brother,
Jace"Alright, let's go." Chip said, slinging a backpack over his shoulder. Miles did the same and I grabbed my bag. Let's do this.
We jogged outside, enjoying the warmth that touched our skin. Determination was our only vibe as we started walking.
"So... Where is the lab anyway?" Miles asked, a dumbfounded look on his face.
"New Jersey." Chip said as we walked. "We're in Connecticut."
"Aw, but that's so far!" Miles whined, crossing his arms.
"We steal a car. Miles is invisible, he can go up to one parked, open the door, throw out the driver and drive off." I said, looking proud.
"Really?! We're going all Grand Theft Auto?!" Miles cried. "Awesome!"
"But that's illegal!" Chip argued.
"Felix, look at us! What they did to us is illegal! They kidnapped us, drugged us and changed us! One small car isn't that big of an issue!"
Chip dropped his shoulders in defeat, "Okay... You have a point."
I nodded and Miles grinned, fading into nothing. I sat down on the curb, watching the traffic go by.
"So can you drive a car?" I asked, knowing I still didn't take driver's training, being homeless and all.
Chip shrugged, "It should be easy... I mean, can't be that different from a helicopter."
I grinned, "You can drive a helicopter, but not a car?"
Chip shrugged, "Yup."
We sat in silence, watching cars go by. I couldn't even imagine what was happening to Aaron right now. I just hoped we could reach him in time.
"Hey guys... Need a ride?" A voice asked. We looked up to see Miles in a large white van.
"That was fast." I muttered, hopping in the shotgun. "You can drive?"
Miles smirked, "Who can't? Go pedal, stop pedal, drive, park and steering wheel."
I rolled my eyes, buckling up. Chip jumped in the back and Miles floored it, shakily going down the road.
"Wait where's the tuning thingie? There's supposed to be a light that goes beep, beep, beep?" Miles asked, looking around and turning on the window wipers.
"Oh lord..." Chip muttered as we screeched our tires to turn.
"So where's Jersey?" Miles asked, flying through a red light.
"Just drive East." Chip ordered, leaning back. I switched on the radio, relaxing as loud music blasted through the van.
"So uh... Jace?" Miles said, glancing at me as we cut off another pickup truck.
"Yeah?" I asked, looking at him. He looked worried.
"What if... What if Aaron is dead? What if they killed him?" He asked, looking at me.
"Then I'll try my best to revive him Miles. Right now all we have is hope." I said, patting his shoulder.
"Right. Hope." Miles said, taking an awkward left handed turn. I listened to the music, looking out the window.
"Jace, in case something goes wrong at the lab... I love you. I love you so much." Miles said, giving a small grin.
I put an arm over his shoulder, "I love you too Miles. Your the best thing that ever happened to me."
Miles smiled fully, his eyes full of happiness, "Promise me you won't die Jace."
"I promise. I'm pretty much invincible. I fell out of a helicopter, got shot plenty of times, I was given a death serum... I'll survive." I said, suddenly thinking of Sam. The look on her face as they dragged her away.
My fists clenched as I imagined us raiding the lab, killing every last scientist in our way. We can do this. We'll survive.
