Once we were down in the laboratory, it didn't take long to spot a concerned, fidgety looking Chris.
"Where were you?" he said, in slight exasperation. Shai rolled her eyes as I tried to take care of the situation before it inevitably blew out of control with Shai's temper.
"Just talking. We're here now, ok?" I said softly. Chris nodded,as if slowly coming to terms with his inevitable inferiority.
"Fine. But look...I'm suppose to be showing the two of you around today. I know we can't talk much here, so follow me." His voice was certain and dark. Shai raised an unconvinced eyebrow, but I nodded.
"Fine. Lead the way." I said quietly. Chris nodded, slowly turning and beginning his trek down a more deserted corridor, away from the hub-ub of the central laboratory.
We followed him cautiously down a series of white walled hallways, the only sound the squeaking of our shoes beneath our feet. Shai stepped up slightly so that she was striding along side me, leaning over and whispering.
"Do you really think we can trust this kid? I mean, he's barely out of diapers!" If had been intended as a whisper, it had failed miserably, as I heard a loud, aggravated sigh coming from in front of us.
"First of all, you don't really have any choice but to trust me-I'm your best bet. And second, I'm not 'barely out of diapers'. I'm only a few years younger that the two of you." His voice didn't cry out in hurt desperation, rather frustration and disinterest. Finally,we stopped at a stainless steel door, well bolted and standing out conspicuously at the end of a deserted corridor. Chris fiddled with the locks and bolts for a second, a faint sound of keys jingling could be heard as Shai and I stood waiting expectantly. Finally, the door swung open heavily from the force of gravity, opening up to the pitch black darkness of the room. Surprisingly, there was no reoccurring slam of the door hitting a wall behind it, simply and low pitched, well padded thud, as though it had slammed into a wall of pillows. I bit my lip with uncertainty as Chris motioned towards the door.
"Ladies first." I sighed, nodding as I stepped forward, about to step into the darkened abyss of the doorway.
"Oh, and don't make any sudden loud noises. You'll frighten her."Those words were enough to scare the daylights out of me, yet somehow, I managed to take those dreaded steps, over the line and into the darkened room. Shai was quick to follow, and Chis was last, shutting the door behind him.
"If you just locked us in here, I swear I'll rip your esophagus out of your throat and make you eat it." Shai growled. I could practically hear Chris' eyeballs rolling in his head as she said it.
"Relax. I have the keys, we're totally fine. Besides, she's harmless." There was an eerie silence.
"Sort of..." It was almost spoken as a casual afterthought, but I could have sworn I felt the air change directions, running away from us as fast as possible- leaving us breathless.
"Come on, Someone help me find the staircase. It should be around here somewhere." Chris said, obviously sensing the change in energy as he tried to avoid he subject matter.
"Chris, stop. What the hell are we talking about here? Are you somehow sending us to our inevitable doom to face some crazed, bloodthirsty monster? Because I am 100% NOT down with that!" Shai whisper yelled. Chris sighed, and I assumed he was shaking his head.Hard to tell in the darkness.
"No, no. Honestly, she won't hurt you. She's just, well, she's kind of unstable. That's why she's locked up. That, and...because she knows too much." He whispered. I raised an eyebrow, which I knew he wouldn't register.
"Knows too much about what?" I asked softly.
"Everything." His voice was brittle as he spoke, his tone dry and void of emotion. The room fell silent.
"Here. I found the staircase. Follow the sound of my voice." He spoke again. I walked towards him, bumping into Shai slightly as we went. Finally, I felt Chris' extended hand, grabbing it as he placed my hand on the staircase railing.
"Ok, just follow the railing to the bottom, then wait for us. Ok?Don't leave the railing. No matter what." Chris' voice was sterndespite our age gap. I gave him a confused look, even though I knew he couldn't see me.
"Wait, what? Why?" I asked nervously.
"Just promise me, that you won't let go of the railing, ok? It's pitch black down there. You think it's dark now? It's about to get 100 times darker. The pit, the place we're about to go? It's probably the creepiest place you'll ever set foot in. The moment you let go of the railing, you become completely disoriented. It's built that way.The farther you walk, the more disoriented you become. The walls, they shift. You'll never find a wall, it's impossible. They sense movement coming towards them, and instantly shift away from you. It's like an endless pit down there. Just you, in the dark, with nothing. It's worse than death. So promise me, you won't let go of the railing." I swallowed nervously. That sounded terrifying.Whoever it was that was down there...they must be going insane.
"I promise." I said, my voice cracking just a hair as I took the first step down the stairs of doom. Here goes nothing.
