The rain hadn’t stopped, just softened into a gentle drizzle. Taehyung stood a little far from the café, under a tree across the street, umbrella in one hand and his heart in the other. His eyes didn’t leave the glass window where Jungkook and Jihoon had sat just minutes ago.

He had seen Jihoon cry--no, break down. And it ached. Every part of his fatherly heart felt like it was splitting in two.

He had never wanted this to happen. He never planned it. Never thought he’d end up standing here, watching his own son cry over the boy he himself loved.

Guilt pressed on his chest like weightless bricks stacking up slowly but heavily. He felt like he’d stolen something from Jihoon. Maybe he did. Maybe he was the reason Jungkook left him. But at the same time, he knew..knew deeply that even if he stepped away, even if he disappeared from Jungkook’s life, it wouldn’t change what Jungkook felt… or didn’t feel… for Jihoon.

Jihoon was attached, Taehyung thought.
Emotionally, maybe deeply. And Jungkook tried. But he couldn’t force his heart to love someone.

So would it have been right to ask Jungkook to stay, just to spare Jihoon pain?

Taehyung sighed and tightened his grip on the umbrella. He had never been selfish in his life. Always put Jihoon first. Always.

But this time, just once… he didn’t want to give up on something that made him feel alive again. Something or rather someone who made him feel loved after years of loneliness.

He had done something not quite right… but not wrong either.

“I will tell him,” Taehyung thought, watching the figure of Jihoon walk away in the rain, shoulders heavy with grief. “But not now. He’s not ready. Not yet.”

Then he saw Jungkook. Running.

His heart stuttered.

Jungkook ran through the light rain, his umbrella in hand at first but he threw it aside the moment he saw Taehyung. Without hesitation, without words, Jungkook crashed into his chest, wrapping both arms around him tightly like he never wanted to let go.

Taehyung held him, umbrella now shaking in his other hand as his chest was filled with warmth and sadness all at once. Jungkook pressed his face into Taehyung’s coat, his breaths shaky but calm. He wasn’t crying, but Taehyung could tell... he was feeling. A lot.

Taehyung rubbed his back gently, eyes softening as he rested his chin on Jungkook’s head. He whispered, “Did everything go okay? Are you okay, my moonflower?”

He didn’t ask about Jihoon.

That was the difference.

He cared. But he prioritized Jungkook. Not because he was cold, but because he loved him. He didn’t need to ask about Jihoon..not now. Because he knew what Jungkook needed was comfort, not guilt.

Jungkook slowly pulled back, a soft little smile appearing on his lips. He pecked the tip of Taehyung’s nose gently and mumbled, “Yeah... I’m okay. It went well.... I’m happy… and also sad.”

Taehyung's brows furrowed with care. He raised a hand to brush back the wet hair sticking to Jungkook’s forehead. “Tell me, sweetheart. Why both? What’s making you happy? And… why the sadness?”

For a second, Taehyung’s heart squeezed. What if the sadness was because Jungkook regretted the breakup? What if he felt guilty enough to change his mind?

But Jungkook smiled gently, resting his cheek against Taehyung’s shoulder again. “I’m happy because… it’s finally over. I don’t have to keep pretending anymore. I’m single again. Which means I can finally date someone I really love.”
