"How are you doing, sweetie?" The soft voice filtered through Jungkook's phone, the sweet, sing-songy voice filling his ears. Dulling the bustling noise of chaotic city traffic that filled the air.
Jungkook sighed, pulling his jacket closer to him, the chill of autumn crawling up his skin, leaving behind the ghost of goosebumps. Pressing the phone a little closer for no reason other than to comfort himself, it's not like anyone else was currently outside anyway.
"I'm a good mom," he said through gritted teeth, jaw tensing more than he had initially realized.
"That's amazing, Koo! How has work been?" He looked at the ground, his feet kicking up small rocks, moving them with the edge of his toes, his Converse shoes scraping as he did.
"It's been okay." His voice came out hushed; he wasn't exactly lying to her.
"They aren't giving you any trouble at the company, right?" Her voice had a hint of worry to it. Not that her sounding concerned really mattered to him.
"No, Mom, it's not."
"Have you gotten to meet any idols yet? I heard that they are always in the company work building, so you must see them a lot!"
Jungkook side-eyed the wall beside him, "No, Mom, I usually just do computer work."
He hadn't planned to tell his parents anything about his actual job for plenty of reasons. They didn't know how to keep their mouths shut for one, especially his mom. "That's my Koo! Can't even look up from his work for a second to see if there's anyone around him." She sighed loudly, drawing it out.
"Yes," he played with his hair, rolling it between his fingertips.
"It's better this way," she hummed. "I was worried when you said you were working in the entertainment industry that you were trying to be an idol again."
Jungkook paused, just staring at the strand of hair he had once been playing with, letting it fall back on his face messily. Teeth mashed together as he leaned back onto the wall, pushing his tongue against the inside of his cheek.
There was some rummaging he heard over the phone, going quiet as his mom continued, not needing a response. "I'm glad you left that to the professionals. I don't need you to waste your time again."
"Right," he mumbled through gritted teeth, voice likely barely audible to his mom.
"I know you hate to hear it, baby, but some people just aren't good enough, and that's okay. I'm proud of you regardless." Jungkook pinched the bridge of his nose, shaking his head. She always knew exactly what to say to put him in a bad mood, which was already an unnecessary addition to an already hard day.
"Thank you," he stated.
"You still keep in touch with your sister? I thought you might have, since you are back in the entertainment industry again. I know she's with SM, but -"
"Can we talk about something else, please, Mom?" Jungkook cut her off; he did not need to hear about her right now.
"You have to get over this jealousy eventually, Jungkook." Her tone stayed sickeningly sweet; he could imagine her smiling expression over the phone just by the tinge in her voice. "Sometimes people have it, sometimes people don't, and she -"
"Seriously, Mom cut it out." He grit his teeth, and the voice on the other end went quiet.
"I just hope you aren't entertaining those silly dreams of yours again, baby," she sighed. Jungkook pulled at his hair, feeling the tinge of guilt creep up on him. She knew exactly what to say to make him feel bad.
