Throughout human history, cultures and civilisations changed in numerous, distinct ways. However, one thing that stayed amongst almost all these cultures was a belief in a god. Tales were both similar and different and many have been remembered to the modern day even if belief in them has stopped. But amongst all these religions are figures that fill a similar role, a visionary. From the prophets of the bible, to Joseph Smith; from the Aztec shamans and priests, to the oracles of Greece, history has had many of these figures that claim to have seen a vision and if they are to be believed is up to each and every person. And one of the most famous figures that fits this role is the maiden of Orleans, Jeanne D'Arc.
As a young girl at the age of thirteen, the future saint testified of visions she had seen of Saint Michael, Saint Margaret, and Saint Catherine frequently. Despite her age and status as a peasant, she demanded to have an audience with the French king but was refused both times despite her testifying of what she had been seen. However, when the news of the supposed visionary and prophesied lady of France reached the king's ears, she was finally granted the audience she had wanted.
The future saint arrived at Chiron and entered the royal court of Charles VII and kneeled before the king, her head bowed. "My king, I come before you as the woman prophesied to bring forth the salvation of France and all those that are on the side of our country."
"I have heard your claims, supposed prophesied saviour. You have seen the saints and angels of the lord, if you are to be believed. And according to your words, you have sworn an oath of purity with these saints," the king said from his throne, unsure whether to believe the words of the girl before him, doubt lingering strongly in his mind.
"Everything you have said is true, my king,' Jeanne stated before she rose from her knees and stood tall before the king. Her hand moved above her heart while the guards' hands moved towards their armaments, a commoner daring to stand as an equal towards the king filling them all with surprise. "Every word that leaves my mouth was fore ordained by the lord himself. The lord has sent me here to bring salvation to our country as the prophesied maiden. I shall lead a siege at Orleans and deliver you to your coronation, for that is the will of the lord."
Charles VII looked over the confident girl before him, impressed by the display she had presented while his mind pondered over her words. "You speak highly of yourself and your accounts despite your current situation, I must commend you. However, without more than just words, how am I to believe that the words you speak are true?"
"I am the prophesied maiden, am I not?" Jeanne quickly responded, her confidence unshaken by the king's doubts as she continued to testify of her role in life. "As has been previously stated, I have made a vow of purity with Saint Margaret and Saint Catherine. I have remained pure all my life and shall continue to be pure as the prophecy stated. And as was also stated, I shall take up arms to follow the lord's guidance and be the saviour of France, for that is what has been commanded of me."
The room fell silent for a short while as the king and his guards silently thought over the declaration the girl before them had made. If she truly were the maiden of prophecy, then the lord had gifted unto them their salvation and the victory of France. While many were still hard of heart and unwilling to fully believe the words of Jeanne, Charles VII was not one of the many and was willing to accept her testimony. Be it out of desperation or faith he couldn't tell, but within his heart a voice called to believe the words spoken unto him. "Guards," spoke the king. "Please leave us be for a moment. I wish to speak with this maiden in private for some time."
All the guards around gave a brief bow before silently leaving the royal court so that just the king and the future saint remained. It is not known what was said in that room and speculations have been made, but none have ever been confirmed. All that is known is that after their private discussion the king was pleased and believed in Jeanne's declarations that she was the maiden chosen by God to save France.
